DarwiinRemote turns Wii Remote into Apple Remote

DarwiinRemote is a neat little application that allows you to use a Nintendo Wii Remote (Wiimote) in place of your Apple Remote. I don't own a Nintendo Wii console yet, so I went out last night and purchased a Wiimote to test with Front Row and Keynote. I'm happy to report that it works quite well. The key mappings work as advertised, and you get the added benefit of having a Bluetooth remote. That basically means you can control your Mac mini without being in its line-of-sight. This could also be a nice solution for you PPC-based Mac mini owners out there running Front Row. What more could you ask for?

Setup

1. Launch DarwiinRemote.
2. Press the 1 and 2 buttons on your Wiimote simultaneously to make it discoverable.
3. The Log drawer in DarwiinRemote should report "Wii Remote is found!".
4. That's it! You are ready to roll, I mean control.

Device reported as Nintendo-RVL-CNT-01.

Key Mappings

I basically found the key mappings to work as advertised. The only problem I had was with fast-forwarding and rewinding music. It would not let me perform either function without jumping tracks. I was able to fast-forward and rewind through movies without any trouble.

It should be noted that using up and down on the Wiimote's D-pad also controls volume up and volume down in Front Row.

I really had fun playing around with DarwiinRemote. It will be interesting to see if they can get the Mouse Mode working better in future releases.
