Boost Mac mini's performance with 3.5-inch hard drive
Friday April 15, 2005 5:08 PM EST
Arthur Whalem of the Arizona Macintosh Users Group "AMUG" has written an article on how to hook up a 3.5-inch 7200RPM hard drive to the Mac mini. The 1.42GHz Mac mini comes standard with a 80GB 4200RPM 2.5-inch drive but some Mac mini enthusiasts have been disappointed with the 2.5-inch drives performance and storage capacity. Arthur thought it would be interesting to see how performance might be improved if he installed a 3.5" 7200 RPM hard drive on the ATA100 IDE bus of a Mac mini. In order to upgrade the 2.5-inch drive to the 3.5-inch drive you'll need to pick up a $23 IDE adapter (pictured below) to convert the Mac mini's 2.5" IDE port into a 3.5" IDE port. Arthur does a great job detailing the installation in his article and has some benchmarks that show a nice performance boost!
