iFixit Posts Teardown of New AirPort Extreme Base Station

iFixit has posted an excellent teardown of Apple's new AirPort Extreme base station with 802.11ac. It shows the device as being extremely easy to disassemble and repair. In fact, they are giving the new AirPort Extreme a solid score of 8 out of 10 on their repairability scale. A score that is right up there with the Apple TV and Mac mini. Other highlights from the teardown show the use of an internal power supply and six internal antenna cables being connected to a metal plate on the top of the device to distribute Wi-Fi.

The teardown also shows the new AirPort Extreme as having an empty 3.5" space and cage in the center of the device, which is undoubtedly used for the hard drive in the similarly designed Time Capsule with 802.11ac. But don't get too excited. There's no chance of a DIY AirPort Extreme to Time Capsule upgrade, as they couldn't find a place on the logic board for connecting a hard drive. Still though, you should head over and check it out. You will be hard pressed to find a better teardown of the new AirPort Extreme.

Update: iFixit also has a teardown of the new Time Capsule now. It provides more information about the hard drive and how it's connected to the logic board.
