Early reviews of the new Mac mini have started rolling out now. We're talking about reviews from PC Magazine, CNET, Computer Shopper and Expert Reviews. The review from PC Magazine is probably the most favorable at this point. In fact, they have awarded the new Mac mini their Editor's Choice Award for best compact PC. They say the new Mac mini innovates and sounds the "death knell" for the optical disc. The other reviews are a little more held up on the lack of an optical disc, but also note the leap forward in technology. Especially when it comes to the dramatic increase in performance and inclusion of Thunderbolt. So, check out the links down below if you're interested in reading more. It's a relatively decent first group of reviews.
PC Magazine - "The new iteration is now powerful enough to take over as that primary PC in your house. Plus it's still a great base station for your iPod, iPhone, and iPad. For all these reasons, the Apple Mac mini (Thunderbolt) earns the Editors' Choice for compact desktop PCs," writes Joel Santo Domingo.
CNET - "Apple's new Mac Mini features some welcome updates and a controversial omission, but overall it remains in the same competitive middle ground as its earlier incarnations. No other system in its price range comes close to the Mac Mini's pleasing, compact design, and this $799 model brings some welcome performance improvements, along with the still-developing potential of its Thunderbolt port," writes Rich Brown.
Computer Shopper - "There's little doubt that Apple's added some serious performance muscle to the Mac Mini in this latest update. But by nixing the DVD drive, it's made the box less appealing to many media-PC enthusiasts," writes Matt Safford.
Expert Reviews - "The computer's core specification is a major improvement on previous models. We've reviewed the $799 model, which has a 2.5GHz Intel Core i5-2520M along with 4GB of memory and an AMD Radeon HD 4250 graphics processor. Compared to the modest Intel Core 2 Duos of previous models, the processor in particular is major technological leap," writes Kat Orphanides.
