Jeff's Mac mini setup
I could have mounted the Mini higher on the wall to hide the cables, but I wanted easy access for connecting digital camera and camcorder. Audio is currently through monitor's internal speakers. Need to find a good wall mount surround sound receiver!
- Mac Mini Core Duo, 1G RAM
- Westinghouse LVM-42w2 1080p monitor
- 300GB HD in fanless enclosure
- Miglia TVMini HD OTA HDTV tuner
- Radio Shack double bow tie UHF antenna (in attic)
- Unicom S-Video + Audio L/R balun from SD DirecTivo (dual tuner) in bedroom
- Xantech IR extender over CAT5 to DirecTivo in bedroom
- Peerless ST650P Universal Tilt Wall Mount
- Apple wireless keyboard and mouse (not shown)
- Universal R7G Remote Control (not shown) programmed to control monitor, TVMini HD, FrontRow

WHAT A TV!

for the sound receiver what you need maybe exists at B&O, you'll need a 5.1 system I guess?
Saaa-WEEEET!
that is so.......awesome You leave me without words to describe it....
How is the mini connected to the monitor DVI to DVI or DVI to HDMI, or just VGA.. What is the resolution...Did you do any tweaks to get this ideal resolution...
F**k that is nice....
Very nice job, Do you have a carefully trained dog to catch those ejected CD's though?
Mini is connected to the monitor DVI to DVI at the native resolution of 1920x1080, no tweaking necessary. The Mini has enough grip on the CD to keep it from falling out (but I still put my hand under it, just to be safe). Glad everyone seems to be liking the setup. My wife was very patient while I did all the "research."

wow, thats just awesome!
yes it's a good install

That is REALLY nice. I appreciate a clean setup like that. Bet your wife does too!

That is so kick a$$!

Absolutely gorgeous!!! What more can ya say!

Amazing, clean setup there, Jeff! Looking to do something similar soon, thanks for the Mini wall mount link.

is the line of site for the FrontRow remote an issue?
this is amazing! you mention a 300gbHD in fanless enclosure. where did you put it?
If you haven't seen it yet, there is another picture posted showing what is behind the screen. Regarding the FrontRow remote: it works fine, so I guess there is enough reflected IR signal to get the job done.

nice, lots of work invested thats for sure!!!

I was showing your setup to my girlfriend. She said she loves your cable management! It'not like at our home she said! It hurts!

nice mount for mini.

Awesome!

Check out the yamaha sound projectors for your sound system. I'm using it to provide surround sound without rear speakers and loving it.
Now if they would make that wall mount accept Belkin's Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and FireWire 6-Port Hub for Mac mini (2544-MMUF) you could have access to ports for cameras and hide the cables.

If you want to stay sleek on the components- use a Migdila Harmony Audio External sound card- 7.1 channels out, 2 channels in- High quality shit, only available through the company's website.

How do you like the Westing house 42". Thinking of buying one, but not too sure about Westinghouse as a TV brand.
is the mini showing HD quality? not sure how 1920xETC turns into 1080i. I've been thinking about upgrading my CRT Trintron with a LCD monitor, and not sure how it all translates.

Toshi - I can't speak for Jeff, but I've seen them at CC and they are pretty darn nice. It was just as nice as the Pannys and Hitachis in the same price range. I also thought the styling of the case was very attractive.

Jeff, we're starting a user section on the site for the Mini mount. Any chance we can uses these pics once we turn it on?

neps - 1920x1080 is 1080p because it supports 1080 (p)rogressive scan of HD vertically, just as 1366x768 is known as 720p (but it can do 1080i - 1080(i)nterlaced - as opposed to progressive). 1080p is the big deal about the ps3 (lets not get into that). MY question is how does the video look in full screen? yeah, im jealous

I would love it if you posted a guide on how you got all this together. Specifically how long did it take you to get pixel perfect output from mac mini to HDTV and what software did you use to do it?
I second that. A detailed description of how you went about your thought process/research would be fantastic! Thanks for sharing!

Spazzium and Buddy is right, a guide would really help a lot of us. Thanks Jeff for the posts !

Awesome use of a mini. As soon as I get mine I'm going to work on something like this. Does anyone know of a Mac tv tuner with multiple av inputs/outputs. I'd like to have my Wii hooked up to it well (as soon as the Wii comes out).

You should send these pictures and explanations to Apple - may be they will give you an award and may be it will give them new product ideas!
@Siva : it's unfortunately(?) forbidden by Apple... See http://www.apple.com/legal/policies/ideas.html

Jeff - how did you tweak your screen rez to match the monitor? My mac mini is hooked up to an HD TV but I have overscan issues.
@JEFF: Props. You've got some mad skillz. Question: I'm confused on how you're handling PVR recording & playback. Can you explain? PVR functionality--sadly lacking in FrontRow--is the only thing I've been waiting for.

Man, this is exactly what I am looking to buy - Best Buy has a sale on that LCD today, and my wife signed off. Show us your guide!

this would be cooler if you were using the mac mini as a front end box for a MythTV set up...

I like the Westinghouse monitor a lot, and I like it even more considering the price. (I think it's going for $1799 at Crutchfield now!) The native 1920x1080 resolution is detected automatically by my Core Duo Mac Mini when it is connected via DVI. No overscan and no special software needed. The Miglia HD tuner works very well, and I use the bundled EyeTV software as a PVR for over-the-air HD broadcasts only. EyeTV is no Tivo, but it gets the job done. Quality is simply awesome at full screen. There is no OTA broadcast in 1080p, but even 1080i and 720p look great. I can't imagine watching some of my favorite shows (24, Lost, The Unit) in SD anymore.

im in europe, where can i get this?

superb! i've been looking to do the same thing, just having a hard time picking between the westy and the sceptre x42gv. you stated that the quality is awesome at full screen...is that ota hd and/or dvd playback?

where did you get the things to hold up the mac mini on the wall

@PG: I have the same question. I can't get rid of the black border around the display on my samsung 40" 1080p display.
@mark: that's how my mac mini is setup
