Haswell M's Mac mini setup
|
Mac Mini 1.42GHz G4 1GB RAM 80GB HDD
20" Cinema Display
4x Belkin Firewire/USB hubs daisychained to Mac mini
Top 2 hubs standard
3rd hub modified wth built in infra-red headphone transmitter
4th hub modified with internal SD card slot, Keyspan infra-red remote
sensor, & Griffin iMic USB audio interface
2 x iPod nano + docks
Samsung NV10 digital camera + dock, USB charging from Belkin hub
Mathmos Aduki mood light, powered via USB, http://www.mathmos.co.uk
Mousemat from http://www.mouserug.co.uk
Desktop picture from http://desktopography.customize.org
The hub modifications required some soldering, rewiring, glueing, and a craft knife. The audio ports are to 3.5mm stereo headphone sockets mounted in the rear of the hubs. The SD reader, iMic, and headphone transmitter were all taken apart and glued in place inside the hubs, there was plenty of unused space in them to do this. The IR remote uses the front ports on the bottom hub for the sensor and activity light.
The camera I used is a bit sensitive to infra-red so you can see the LEDs of the headphone transmitter glowing in the photo.

That's cool how you modded the Belkin hubs. What do their guts look like? Is hard to get them apart?

Hey Haswell M, Very Cool setup! Me Like! Any chance you'd share how to mod the belkin hubs... I know they're easy to get open, but any chance you could share (or PM) a shot of the hubs open?

Thanks for the comments and the queries. I'll try and get some internal photos soon. For further info, I got the hubs cheap from our local Currys in the UK. They got a job lot but couldn't sell them, in the end they were almost giving them away for a tenner each. Obviously not many Mini owners in Andover. The headphone transmitter seems to suffer from background noise, I need to try some shielding or extra decoupling on the power supply.
