Jeff's Mac mini setup II
I could have mounted the Mini higher on the wall to hide the cables, but I wanted easy access for connecting digital camera and camcorder. Audio is currently through monitor's internal speakers. Need to find a good wall mount surround sound receiver!
- Mac Mini Core Duo, 1G RAM
- 300GB HD in fanless enclosure
- Miglia TVMini HD OTA HDTV tuner
- Radio Shack double bow tie UHF antenna (in attic)
- Unicom S-Video + Audio L/R balun from SD DirecTivo (dual tuner) in bedroom
- Xantech IR extender over CAT5 to DirecTivo in bedroom
- Peerless ST650P Universal Tilt Wall Mount
- Apple wireless keyboard and mouse (not shown)
- Universal R7G Remote Control (not shown) programmed to control monitor, TVMini HD, FrontRow

Check out the other picture with the monitor installed. I just thought a few folks might appreciate the stuff behind the scenes.

Nice job! Can you come over to my house and hook me up?
Two questions. 1. Does mounting the Mac mini like that affect the IR range? 2. Where did you get the brackets for the Mac mini's power adapter?
I was a little worried about the IR range, too, but it seems to work fine. I can control it from across the room if I aim a little low. Guess there is enough reflected signal.
All of the brackets for wall mounting the hard drive, power bricks, and the TV tuner were made from plumber's strapping covered with heat shrink tubing. I sank in wall anchors where there was no stud and bent the brackets to shape with pliers and by hand. I also put little rubber feet on the back of every wall mounted component to keep tension on the brackets and allow for a little backside airflow. Very solid; those things aren't going anywhere!

Cool. I've been really impressed with the range and responsiveness of the Apple Remote with the mini.
where did u find the straps for holding up the power supply and the hard drive
You need a pair of fuzzy dice hanging from that too.
Check my previous comment for details on the straps.

That looks like the setup they have at my local Mac Store in Beaverton, Oregon. Has a 60+inch plasma hooked up to all that madness.

Does the Mac Mini actually do the PVR'ing? IF so, What software is used? can anyone post a setup/config for something like this.?
cool
i got two words........wow........wait a minute, thats one word.
uh... and it's just that simple
Nice organization.. But how is the usability + controlling the DTivo?
Cool, but you gotta get rid of all the 'extra' cable. Coils are ugly! Go for minimalism! Also, a laser level couldn't hurt if you want to go for absolute perfection.
Wall mounted surround you say?? --- Yamaha YSP-800 or 1000 digital sound projector (depending on the size of your room)
PVR software is EyeTV running on the Mac. Check out http://www.miglia.com/products/video/tvminihd .
that is pimp! ima do that!
How does the PVR work with the DirecTiVO? Are you using the MacMini to record over-the-air?
VERY cool! What wire did you run in the wall for S-video and L/R audio
sick! i love it
I'll take three.
It's cool to actually see our wall mount in action. I love user pics!
How is the actual Mini mounted?
If you're using a Plasma, Burn-In is a major issue. Just a word of warning on an otherwise cool project.

Huge reccomendation: Buy a really nice power strip so a voltage spike doesn't fry the whole stup. They have little slots on them so they can be wall mounted
this is GENIUS! If you were a girl........
Nicely done, bubbe. I need to start thinking ahead in terms of outlets before my next installation.

does not really work as a pvr. read the FAQ of Eyetv.
from the FAQ
Q: Can I connect my cable or satellite receiver to TVMini?
A: No. TVMini only receives digital terrestrial signals,
you'll be SOL if you want to record from cable box, direct tv, etc
But dang it does look clean.

Nice job!
Nice job man! I would suggest to mount a power strip also, just incase...

DirectTivo from the back bedroom is run to the monitor over CAT5 cable terminating on Unicom S-Video + Audio L/R baluns. This is SD only. The quality is better than I expected, for SD. I also use the EyeTV software on the MacMini as PVR for over-the-air HD coming in on the Miglia TVMini. So it is like I'm using two seperate PVRs. The Mini wall mount is from JH consulting (http://www.hubbell.biz/products/minimounts2/) and works great. Nice and secure with a minimal design. BTW, Jeremy, feel free to use my photos.

Have you had any heat issues with the fanless HD enlosure? What type of HD is it? IDE, SATA? How did you deal with the overscan, etc? Was there much?
ugly setup doesn't really stand out
I work with A/V equipment and setup every day, and I have to say this is a beautiful setup if you are looking to mount a good portion of the equipment. I personally prefer a solution near other A/V equipment, but this is really inventive and clean with the amount of equipment it uses.

Can you tell me what kind of brackets you have going on there to mount all your other devices - like the hard drie and tuner? Where did you get them from? Thanks - awesome setup - it has inspired me to do something similar.

That's insane!! I love it!
