LaCie intros Huby FireWire/USB hub
Thursday, November 30, 2006
Posted by: Brian
LaCie today unveiled the Huby, a stylish hub created exclusively for the company by designer Ora-Ïto. The LaCie Huby (pronounced hub-ee) includes two FireWire and four USB ports for easily connecting a variety of peripherals. Its round shape, glossy white polycarbonate finish and flexible cables give it a distinctive, modern look never before seen in a hub. It comes fully equipped with eight flexible, twistable cables to instantly connect external storage devices, printers, media readers, keyboards, mice and more. Eight glowing LEDs indicate when a device is plugged in, with a different color for each port: white, violet, green, red, yellow, orange, blue and pink. Additional LaCie Hubys can be daisy-chained via FireWire or USB for extra connectivity options. It also ships with a USB fan and small USB light. The LaCie Huby will begin shipping in December with a suggested retail price of $79.

This is an odd product to come from a company like LaCie. I'm sure it is extremely good quality. The strange thing is LaCie is usually all business, most of their lines are clean and stylish.
I don't quite see the need for this product. I can see a product like the PowerSquid being usefull for large plugs, but other than a thumb drive most USB and firewire plugs seem to be a standard size. Maybe I'm missing something but this Huby seems to be a way to add clutter to your set-up, with very little added convenience beyond what a traditional hub offers.
Sorry to post a negative comment, especially about a company that I adore. Fill me in if you feel otherwise. |

I like it! I think it would add a touch of style to a clean set up. Plus, with it having the flexible cables you won't need to be reaching in awkward ways to plug in you devices. No, I don't think this should be used for long term connections, but for someone who plugs in different devices on regular basis I definitly see an advantage.

Call me crazy, but I kind of like it. I'm not sure it would help my cable management situation though.

I would imagine it has plugs on the back. Then you just connect the arms you want down into the body. It also looks like you can leave the top off, dump the arms and connect things directly into the ball. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)

I'm not sure I like it. I don't think I would want to try to get that trough airport security either. _________________ Mac Pro Quad 2.66GHz, PowerMac G5 2.3 GHz, iMac Core Duo 17", MacBook Pro 2GHz, MacBook Pro 2.2GHz, Mac mini Core 2 Duo 1.83GHz. | If you just got the ball so your cords went into the hub. I think it would look nicer. But not worth 80 bucks. |

Agreed. This seems strange coming from a company like LaCie, but I'm sure some people will find it artsy and buy one. I also agree with your PowerSquid comment. Large plugs under your desk is one thing, but this on your desk we are talking about.

I think it looks like da bomb, not a bomb.
Cool, but don't stop there.

| This seems like the kind of product a company releases to generate buzz. I don't imagine LaCie plans on selling a gazillion of these things. Personally, I don't think companies like LaCie and Iomega are as relevant as they were 2-3 years ago. So it doesn't surprise me that they would look for out-of-the-ordinary products to generate some enthusiasm and buzz for their brands. |

Ouch!
I think it looks like a high-tech flowers in a vase when the cables are spread out. But that's bad news for LaCie. I hate flower vases.

Maybe in the CD/DVD burner and Zip drive markets, but not with external hard drives. I think LaCie makes some of most popular external drives on the market. _________________ 1.42GHz Mac mini

I think the hub is inside, and the ball conceals the plugs... and they give you extensions for things like jump drives....
I think it is kinda cool.... I guess.
