Well, even a maxed-out MacBook costs less than a MacBook Pro. But I would go with the entry level MacBook Pro for $1,800 with an educational discount since you are student.
Some of the my reasons.
1. Bigger screen with higher resolution. I don't think I could work on a 13" screen everyday.
2. Better video card.
3. Better keyboard. I'm not crazy about those chicklet-style keys on the MacBook.
4. Better speakers.
5. ExpressCard/34 slot. |

I would say the MacBook, unless you're going into a career that would call for a MacBook Pro. I would only use a MacBook for media mostly, since I could, just build a powerful PC for less (which I am actually) as long as you are used to the environment it's not that bad on Windows however, I'm switching over to Linux on this laptop when I build a decent PC. _________________ "You must control your future by taking command of your present, and fixing and learning from your past."

You're just finishing high school. For sure I would say Macbook. You're not going to need anything more than that for an Engineering course and both will be obsolete by the time you're done school.

RAM is a bitch to buy now, it's at a standstill, DDR is pricey since it is becoming outdated technology, then DDR2 for desktops is unbelievably pricey for higher clock speed. Now with Laptop memory DDR is cheap, and DDR2 is slighty cheaper than desktop, since it is all basically one or two kinds being used for Intels and AMD Turions 64 X2's, so the market isn't as flooded with types you could potentially need to buy. _________________ "You must control your future by taking command of your present, and fixing and learning from your past."

I say if you have the money.. get the best you can afford, you'll probably enjoy it more.
I think with engineering, you will have to give examples of what you would use it for.
-If it was for just taking notes in class, I'd say MacBook.
-But if you are running engineering specific programs, which might be mostly Windows, I'd rather run Boot Camp or Paralles on a MacBook Pro over a MacBook.
So you gotta realize how much power you will really need before purchasing. _________________

it would be for either electric or computer engineering using it for:
taking notes
modelling stuff
and other engineering specific programs _________________

Even still, more power and more screen real estate would equal a better experience. _________________
