Does it have "serious glass"? As to the aesthetics, its essentially an aluminium toilet roll tube. _________________ iMac intel CoreDuo 17" 1Gb

Yes, there are actually a pretty decent set of glass lens in the original iSight, as well as a pretty nice mic. A big part of that design was also to mitigate heat, and compared to the other web cams at the time (or even today as most are highly derivative of the original Intel lan camera from quite a while back) it was a break away design. Still is in my eyes, and still has the best picture quality. _________________ | Mac mini 2011 | Apple Thunderbolt Display | Apple keyboard and Magic TrackPad | 2Tb Time Capsule | Apple TV (3) | iPhone 4s |

Call me crazy, but I kinda like the way it looks. The iMage name is kinda catchy too. Its technical specs, on the other hand, are a little under-whelming. I don't know about you, but USB Webcams don't do much for me. _________________ 14" 1.25GHz G4 iBook (died)

Yea, that 15fps cap is weak sauce... _________________ | Mac mini 2011 | Apple Thunderbolt Display | Apple keyboard and Magic TrackPad | 2Tb Time Capsule | Apple TV (3) | iPhone 4s |

Well integrated iSight cams are of course good for video conferencing but the beauty of the separate iSight is you can pick it up and use it to make movies, for youtube for example. It does sadden me though that Apple seems to think USB over Firewire now, I suppose it is to make peripherals more likely compatible with the widest range of machines and users. _________________ _________________

Can you tell me what Photobooth does with a webcam. I had it installed but could not find the webcam use with it? _________________ ___________________Jim©

Hey people.
I actually ordered one because I needed a webcam for a college class - don't ask - and the iSight is both a) unavailable and b) expensive. So I saw this cheap little thing on 123MacMini and bought it. Let me just say this about it...
a) the quality and versatility of the product is actually very good, in my opinion... granted, I've used maybe 2 other webcams in my entire life and never actually owned one, but I like this thing
and b) its freakin' tiny... I didn't think it'd be so small. It's maybe an inch and a half long, no joke. Pretty impressive for its size (though the same can be said for the Mac Mini.)
Anyway, that's it. Just thought people might like a quick review. _________________ As of June 2007: traded the 20" low-end aluminum iMac for a 24" high-end previous-generation white iMac. Performs better all-around. |

Sweet! I've been waiting on the iSight to get back in stock for the last few weeks, and I'm starting to get impatient. I might order one of these instead.
How would you rate the video quality? Oh yeah, does it have a mic? I don't see it mentioned on the product page. |

In my opinion the quality is fine... but I've never really had to deal with webcams before. While I'm sure the iSight has a higher video quality, this is great for what I paid.
And no, it doesn't have a mic. _________________ As of June 2007: traded the 20" low-end aluminum iMac for a 24" high-end previous-generation white iMac. Performs better all-around. |

I'm still far more enamoured by the design of my iSight, but it hasn't worked since the last update .
I detest the built-in cameras, the design pares down the functionality to a single task, not a very Apple way of doing things.
I may pick up a iMage to try, if the video quality is good enough, I can forgive the lack of mic and USB interface. |

I just received mine, (only took 2 days to get via USPS) and it works great! I'm very impressed. It being USB makes it nice and swappable from my Mac to Win Boxes, and as small as it is with the velvet bag means I can tote it around. For those that would like a portable one, that does decent 640x480 video, I'm happy. I did not want to pay the money for an iSite (sp), when all I expected or rather wanted it for was everything less production. _________________ www.cypher-sec.org |
