Maybe this has already been tried, but I think some of the forums (probably not all) would be more useful if they had a sticky, up-to-date FAQ or advice thread or two.
Example: for HTPC, how to get DVD Player to output optical audio, a rundown on the best and/or most popular Front Row add-ons / replacements, a TV-specific list of known issues and workarounds, etc.
Searching is only as good as the subjects, which are often terse, and I'm sure a lot of repetition occurs without such FAQ/advice sticky posts. On the other hand, repetition isn't ALWAYS bad, either.
Jsut a thought.

I've PM'd Brian with this suggestion a couple of months ago and they then introduced "stickies" so I think they will introduce FAQs when they have the time to compile them.
However I think they should canvas the senior "techies" in the community for help with compiling them. There's a lot of expertise around. _________________ iMac intel CoreDuo 17" 1Gb

Ya some of the senior members should become moderaters on topics they know a lot of stuff about. _________________

I'm sure some people get a little tired of answering the same question or problem 100 times over. Most of the time it is someone who doesn't bother to look hard enough for the solution. In which they get someone else to do it for them. _________________

I think whatever is decided is difficult to manage.
Educating people on the search feature, making topic headings specific and keeping threads on topic would work.
Guess what... most people won't do this.
Some sort of sticky may be a good idea, but that requires quite a bit of work. What is worth making sticky and is it something everyone agrees upon?
Every thought, idea, piece of info on this forum can probably be found through a Google search. So I guess it needs to be decided if this is a discussion forum or an information resource? I think it can be both if people do the aforementioned (Specific Topics, keeping on topic, using the search feature).
Good luck whatever is decided. |
