Apple releases Mac OS X 10.4.8
Friday, September 29, 2006
Apple today released the Mac OS X 10.4.8 Update via its Software Update utility and on the Web. According to the company, the 10.4.8 Update is recommended for all users and includes general operating system fixes, as well as specific fixes for the following applications and technologies:
- connecting to wireless networks using the EAP-FAST protocol
- Apple USB modem reliability
- using OpenType fonts in Microsoft Word
- compatibility with 3rd party USB hubs
- scanner performance
- RAW camera support
- printing documents with Asian language names
- performance of the Translation widget
- broadband network performance
- security updates

OUCH!
A lot of people are reporting problems with Rosetta... Adobe and MS apps don't work anymore and it is reeking havoc on intel macs right now...
I think I am going to sit this one out...
Besides, I don't feel I need to update the mini...
Oh and my update would come in at 147MBs.... how about yours?
I am on a MacMini Intel Core Duo

| My Intel update was 211MB. I verified and repaired the permissions after it was done and everything appears running smoothly. |

I'll never understand why it is that the MBs always differ from person to person. I mean same machine, probably the same specs as well and yet it has a different about that it updates in terms of MBs...
I just find it strange...

| Some people aren't current with all their updates. I think it loads all the security updates their systems are missing. There's also a difference in size between the Intel and PPC updates. |

Yeah that has to be it...
Still, I would like to have Leopard already... I saw it on a MacMini Core Duo the other week. My friend has an ADC membership and has 4 macs... Now, on the mini, TimeTravel was really suffering... I mean it was horrible...
I know it is a preview and all, but this was just not very good to look at... Didn't notice anything else except the spaces which I liked but then we all saw those things in action. On his Mac Pro the TimeTravel app worked like a charm but on the mini... not so good... so I am a bit worried...

How much RAM and what kind of external drive was he using? It is BETA but there are a lot of factors that will impact Time Machine.

While I tend to agree this is technical voodoo, it really isn't worth pointing out as some people are very comfortable with the idea that it helps...

He had 1GB of ram in it and was using a LaCie pocket Drive that was a 5400rpm firewire connection. He said that at first he had problems installing it on his external HD till he read in the notes he got with the DVD, that it has to be reformatted in order to be compatible with Leopard. In other words, it had to be an INTEL bootable drive. Which it wasn't, and while it worked fine on his other macs and intel macs as well, it seems that you cannot install the Intel OS (present and future versions) on a normal HFS HD. It has to be something else he mentioned, but I cannot remember the name of the format.
Still it ran well on the Mac Pro and not on the Mini... Yet he did the install on the Mini and moved it over to the mac Pro...
A bit confusing... And all in all, I have to say that it will be in late march or April of next year before we see the final release...
He was told by Apple, that it is only half of the OS that will be released next year. They apparently have more features that they feel comfortable with not having to test in the beta release. And they don't want others to start making apps based on those new ideas. Or so they say...

I didn't have any issues with the 10.4.8 update or repair the disk permissions after it was done, but hasn't Apple recommended repairing them with a point release before?
I'm getting excited as these updates roll along. I mean they only have room for two more before Leopard! I've become a Mac fanboy in less than six months with my mini.  |

Update went smoothly for me (147MB). Seems speedier, and the border on the sides of my display that appeared after 10.4.7 are now gone and I am getting full screen again.

Intel Duo iMac here; upgrade to 10.4.8 smooth as silk. but I AWAYS use the COMBO update not the deltas.
MS apps working fine, even might be a bit snappier on the display refreshes.
Photoshop, no has no issues either.
If you have problems with the update and you didn't use the COMBO, try installing the COMBO update to see if that cures the problem.
And Starcraft works fine too!
