Macworld reports C2D overall speed increases of a mere 10% over CD
http://www.macworld.com/2006/09/firstlooks/imacbench/index.php
Which makes my hunger to upgrade more of a peckish feeling
Most of the improvement seems to be down to the boosted L2 cache. _________________ iMac intel CoreDuo 17" 1Gb

Yea, I'm pretty much of the mind that anything less than a 30% boost doesn't "feel" faster, I'm not budging until after MacWorld and Leopard. _________________ | Mac mini 2011 | Apple Thunderbolt Display | Apple keyboard and Magic TrackPad | 2Tb Time Capsule | Apple TV (3) | iPhone 4s |

I agree. I still think I'll update when Leopard ships as I'd be buying the new OS anyway and add to that the cost of Applecare for another 2 years (the iMac will be 8 months old then) which I'd put off for another year by buying new (with hopefully a reasonable resale price on this iMac) and I think I may also move to a 20" as the price has fallen about 25% here since the Intel iMacs were introduced.
Odd to think I'm pretty keen to do this as I thought I'd pick up a MacBook when Leopard shipped but if it stays CD instead of C2D then it isn't interesting.
I hope the move to a 20" is something I can appreciate as I bought a 19" monitor recently and it really didn't seem that much different to the 17" on the iMac. Obviously it was larger but didn't seem that different. Then again I had to return it as it was faulty, so perhaps that took the appreciation down a notch or two.

Probably because your 17 and 19 inch both run at 1280x1024, so it is the same resolution, just a bigger presentation. I think you will find the jump to 1680x1050 to "feel" much bigger, honestly, anything less now feels unusable to me. My T60 at work defaults to 1440x1050 and that is tolerable, but my external display is on 1280x1024, I hardy use it.
I'm very curious as to what we will see between MW2007 and Leopard shipping; a speed bumped mini or an iMac 20" are not out of the question for me at this point. _________________ | Mac mini 2011 | Apple Thunderbolt Display | Apple keyboard and Magic TrackPad | 2Tb Time Capsule | Apple TV (3) | iPhone 4s |

Both the iMac and the extended monitor 19" widescreen are/were 1440x900. 1680x1050 will be fun though. _________________ iMac intel CoreDuo 17" 1Gb

1440x900 = 1,296,000
1280x1024 = 1,310,720
I love everything widescreen myself, but I have no idea how the industry standardized on a 17/19" widescreen resolution that actually deliver less usable space than 17/19" in standard aspect ratio? I know it's not a lot, but they do charge a premium for "widescreen" as a feature.
