Upgrading a G3 iBook???

I have a kinda old G3 700MHZ ibook. It has a CD-ROM (NOT RW/DVD) a regular airport card (11.0MBPS), 256MB RAM, 20 GB HD, Umm. what else...

Anyway, I want to upgrade it.

I am getting some money (Not enough for a new computer, but maybe enough to upgrade this.

What can I do to upgrade it? How much ram will it take? Should I consider another HD? And a DVD rom?

What are some sources to get these??

Tiger runs fine on my G3 800Mhz 768Mb though really sticking to Panther would have been enough.

There is a mod out there for upgrading to 802.11g by stripping a USB pen and using only the innards - thought I'd got the link from here.

Ummm. I currently have OS X 10.2 on there, and I'd like to get a firewire cable (What kind???) to use the dvd drive of my mini to upgrade it.

Tenex, if you could find that link it'd be cool, but I don't really want to open it up.

Where can I get cheap ram and a cheap hard drive?

Hard drives - no.

RAM I bought from Crucial.

Oh and to avoid confusion when I said opening it up was easy I was referring to the Airport and RAM upgrade. The HDD I have no idea.

I believe so. That's why it isn't worth spending a fortune upgrading. I'd certainly consider an external HDD instead of a new internal.

Also consider these iBooks have a USB 1.1 slot so moving large amounts of data is painfully slow.

Would you reccommend SAVING the money, for an iMac? I know thats not portable but I'd love one, lol..

Is that the better choice? The cheapest is $999, so maybe by Christmas, if I sell some things, I could get my self a gift. lol.

That's a difficult one only you know your needs and budget. I set out to buy a Mini but ended up with an iMac because I got a great deal. If you have a monitor and keyboard/mouse then the mini is a good choice, but if you don't have those items then an iMac makes sense.

Have a look here there are a few posts like yours asking this question see what others have contributed. One thing is different now though, both the Mini and iMac have lower priced entry points.

I "Tuned" my 800mhz ibok

maxed the mem to 640.
installed a dvd superdrive. complete with original ibook tray cover to make it look original.
then installed the latest ox. runs nice....

Speaking of "tuning" there's a guide on the MacWorld website to tuning OS X for best performance - some of the tweaks are quite useful.
