Apple Introduces Mac Pro
Monday, August 7, 2006
Apple today unveiled the new Mac Pro, a quad Xeon, 64-bit desktop workstation featuring two new Dual-Core Intel Xeon processors running up to 3.0 GHz and a new system architecture that delivers up to twice the performance of the Power Mac G5 Quad. With advanced performance, greater expansion, higher performance graphics options and unprecedented customization, the newly designed Mac Pro is the ideal system for the most demanding user. The introduction of the Mac Pro marks the completion of a rapid and seamless transition for Apple, with the entire Mac family now using Intel's latest processors.
The Mac Pro, with a suggested retail price of $2,499 (US), includes:
- Two 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon processors
- 1GB of 667 MHz DDR2 fully-buffered ECC memory expandable up to 16GB
- NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT with 256MB of GDDR2 SDRAM
- 250GB Serial ATA (3Gb/s) hard drive running at 7200 rpm
- 16x SuperDrive with double-layer support (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
- Four PCI Express slots: one double-wide graphics slot and three full-length expansion slots
- Ships with Mighty Mouse and Apple Keyboard

The Xserve is now powered by Intel too.
The question is, when will we get the Core 2 Duo in the Mac mini? Along with a real dedicated GPU with its own VRAM, of course... |

It actually went with a lot of things most of us said it "needed". Like a starting point of 1GB, two drive bays, the Woodcrest processors.
The only thing is, where is a Mac?

That's great. However... even if it had 10 Woodcrest processors, I'm not in the market for a computer that starts at $2500. I'm not complaining... it's just not for me.
I wouldn't get too caught up in the WWDC releases. I'm sure Apple is purposely holding out on us. They do not want their product releases to be overly predictable.
For those of us hoping for the "headless" Mac, I think we still have hope. |

Noticed how much you can put in the Mac Pro?
16GB of RAM, 2TB of HD space, up to 4 GPUs, two 3GHz Xeon processors, two SuperDrives. That is all at a crazy price, but goddamn.

I'm now hoping for Sep. in Paris. Along with the speedbumps and Merom incorporation into the rest of the line.

Yes and no. Because some Pros need the definite power that only a Mac Pro can and could deliver. I think they would water down a Mac so it wouldn't get into Mac Pro sales. Like limit the RAM to 4GB, only 750GB HD, Core 2 Duo's. Sure those are good specs, but nothing compared to the 2TB, 16GB, quad core Xeon processors and 4 GPUs.

I agree with Bandit Bill. The new Mac Pro is a great machine if you NEED that much power, but Apple continues to ignore the mid-level user who doesn't want a built in screen (or that damn iChat camera staring at me). It's been almost two years since I purchased my last Apple product . . . either they or I have changed . . . but there isn't anything at my local Apple store that I want. Now about that new television . . .  |

| Well, I agree, this configuration of the Mac Pro leaves a nice, big, gaping hole in the line that needs to be filled - in the $1000-1500 price range. I am really looking forward to Paris too - we need some new ACDs one of these days. |

That's a great price for what you get today. IIRC, my first Mac, an SE with 1 MEGAbyte of memory and 20 MEGAbyte hard drive was $2799.

I'm sure many of us have spent $2500 on a computer. I spent $1800 on a 386 tower. Well over $2000 for my Pentium 100 tower.
However the days of an "average" home user spending over $2000 on a tower alone are long long over.

It's dated but it proves my point. In 2005 the average cost of a PC was $850.
If Apple wants Joe Average to switch. It's time to offer a headless "Mac" in the $1000 (or lower) range.
One point that I have not seen discussed is... if Apple decides to release a lower priced Mac... how close or far away from Vista's release date should this be done? If Apple waits too long many people will wait until Vista is released before making purchase decision. |
