Fujitsu Announces 2.5" Serial ATA 200GB Hard Drive
Wednesday March 29, 2006

Fujitsu has announced that its MHV2200BT 200GB 2.5" Serial ATA hard drive will begin shipping in the third quarter. According to the company, the MHV2200BT was developed to address the growing demands for mobile hard disk drives with the performance and capacity required for external HDD products as well as high-end audio/video computing applications such as gaming, video editing, audio recording and DVR functionality.

The MHV2200BT builds on nearly five years of SATA development on the 2.5" platform to provide best-in-class low power consumption, unmatched capacity at 200GB, high shock tolerance, and quiet operation. The hard drive also features a hardware accelerator that maximizes Native Command Queuing (NCQ) performance, an important feature that enables the hard disk drive controller to intelligently and simultaneously queue and reorder up to 32 instructions, resulting in a significant improvement in overall hard disk drive performance.

Good news:
- it's 200GB;
- it can be installed in a Mac mini Core Solo/Duo.

Bad news:
- it's gonna be a few months before it's available;
- it won't work in a Mac mini G4.

Anyone knows if it uses Hitachi's perpendicular recording technology?

More good news:
Decent amount of storage.
Prices should start to fall on the 100GB-160GB models out there.

More bad news:
The drive is only 4200 RPM.
The thing is probably going to cost an arm and leg.

Even more good news:
It will eventually hit 7200 RPM and the 4200 RPM will drop in price.

Even more bad news:
By that time there will be an even bigger 2.5" SATA HD.

Just thought I'd mess with the both of ya..... lol

200GB internally sounds good to me, however at what price. Currently notebook drives are about 3x as higher then standard 3.5 drives. So in theory this drive could cost to $210-300. Don't forget its also slower drive.

Hmm...
