I have a $500 mini with 1GB of memory. Add to that a Maxtor 300GB External drive.
Now I want a external DL DVD burner. I hear that there is a fix so that you can use iDVD with the external drive. Anyone have the fix? |

Keep in mind that DL does not work with Patchburn, look under the FAQ sec. |

Q: Will PatchBurn give me write support for double layer (8.5 GB) media?
A: PatchBurn will not give you double layer support. This is up to the burn engine inside Mac-OS X, PatchBurn has no influence on that. For double layer support please use Roxio Toast Titanium 6.0.7 or newer.
Does that mean it will not work with the drives at all or it will not work with DL disks?
I wonder if there is a new version of iDVD that uses DL drives? Since there are new macs w/ them. |

Hum, it seems like PatchBurn's writer might be wrong on this one. Looking on Apple's website it looks like DVD+R DL support isn't based in OS X but in iDVD. If you download iDVD 5.0.1 update it should give you support for DVD+R DL http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/idvd501update.html
However, it's still not entirely clear if PatchBurn will enable a firewire DVD burner to have 1) full iDVD 5 functionality 2) enable DL burning. I guess there's only one way to find out. |

Note with iDVD 5 it is possible to save the dvd as an image and thus this patch is no longer required. |
