Macpower Readies M9 SATA Enclosures

Macpower has recently announced that it will be releasing three new M9 enclosures for 3.5" SATA hard drives this summer. The M9 series of enclosures are designed to complement the Mac Mini. The M9-DX2 uses the Oxford 924 DSA chipset, and features an integrated 3-Port FireWire and 3-Port USB 2.0 hub. The M9-S2H uses the J-Micron 20336 chipset, and features an integrated 3-Port USB 2.0 hub and eSATA port. The M9-S2 also uses the J-Micron 20336 chipset, but only offers USB 2.0 and eSATA connectivity. It does not include an integrated USB 2.0 hub. All three models will accommodate a single 3.5" SATA-I or SATA-II hard drive and feature Macpower's smart fan technology.

Too bad they don't have a FireWire + eSATA model. After all, the new Mac mini have enough USB 2.0 ports for most people (keyboard, mouse, printer, digital camera/iPod). Even better would be a FireWire + USB 2.0 + eSATA model.
No that I want one anyway, with the deals currently available on the "old" PATA 3.5" drives (just bought a 250GB Maxtor for 99$CAD at Future Shop).
My M9-DX and M9-DX rev.2 are still working fine too, so unless I want to have a "mini-tower" Mac mini setup, I'll stop at two hubs. And with two 250GB drives, I'll be ok for file storage for a long time.
I only wish they would've changed that long blue indicator for a nice white one just like the Mac mini (after all, Belkin did it with their slim hub).

The blue light is one of the small reasons why I ended up going with the LaCie mini. I think these will work out nicely for people that have a spare SATA drive sitting around though.

Glad to see that. I would like to have an enclosure for the stock hard drive I removed from my iMac G5. I replaced the stock drive with a 10,000 rpm Western Digital Raptor drive.

So can this enclosure be used with the SATA mod to connect a large external SATA drive to the mini? I'd love to boot from a 750GB SATA HDD instead of the 2.5" internal or a FW external -- especially if I didn't have to hack the external enclosure.
If this is possible, is there a cable that will connect the SATA jumper on the mini's motherboard to this eSATA enclosure, or will that have to be a custom job? |
