Integrated Intel GMA 950 graphics with 64 MB shared graphics memory = my 12" PowerBook didn't drop too much in value, at least for some potential buyers.

It's sort or a rip paying $100 more for black. I wish they would have offered a less expensive black model. |

I just priced out the black model with 1GB RAM and 100GB hard drive and it came to $1699 + tax. At that price, I'm more tempted to buy a MacBook Pro on Amazon for 2K minus a $150 rebate. Bigger screen and dedicated graphics = more fun! The black looks really cool though. |

My biggest disappointment is the glossy screen. Unless you compute in the dark, there will be glare on the screen - often a lot of glare. I have a PC laptop with a glossy screen that I was hoping to replace with a Mac laptop. There is no way I'm buying a glossy screen laptop again. I'll get an iMac or Mac Mini instead _________________ Peace!

I know exactly what you are talking about. I almost bought a VAIO FS until I saw the glossy screen in person. Sony calls their glossy screens XBRITE, but they are very distracting in the light. I saw more of my face on the screen than the OS itself. I might go down to the Apple store and check them in person before making up my mind. The entry-level MacBook is starting to tempt me a little. |

Try $200! You also get an 80GB hard drive for extra $200, which is worth $50 as BTO option. So in all reality, you are being charged $150 for the black plastic.
I almost bit for the 1.83Ghz model, but then decided to give it a few days. I really think the 1.83Ghz Core Duo processor is going to be good for my needs and I need another DVD burner like a hole in the head. Guess I'll wait for the reviews to start coming in. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)

The glossy screen is optionnal for the MacBook Pro. I don't see it as an option for the MacBook. Strange. |

I totally agree with everyone on the glossy screen. I can't for the life of me imagine why computer manufacturers are changing to glossy coated screens, which make it difficult if not impossible to see what you're working on in any room with ceiling light sources - most workplaces, coffee shops, airports - virtually anywhere you'd need portability!
Can anyone explain to me why the computer industry thinks these glossy screens are a good idea?!?!?! |

They improve colors and contrast for photos, movies, etc. I think one vs. the other is a personal preference, and it would have been nice if the MacBook would have had the same option for choice of screen as the MacBook Pro does.
That said, I suspect that it's another way to differentiate the products and induce upgrading to Pro models. I'd also guess that 95% of the target audience for the MacBook is only going to notice the pretty colors and not the details of the drawbacks.

Your post should come with a disclaimer. Scary flashback time. I thought I'd left the Trash 80 far behind me.
Although, on second thought, it certainly was portable.
