Installing OSX x86 on a Dell laptop is not officially supported. You have to go to several cracks, and, when it finally works, it is not garanteed that it will still work after an update.
Unless you want to spend a whole week hacking in code to get it to work I wouldn't do it. You are way better off saving for an Mac Intel Mini, but that's just my 2 cents

According to Apple, XP SP2 is it. It must be a full version. No upgrades and no earlier versions of Windows.
This is copied directly from Apple's site: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303572
Requirements
To use Boot Camp Beta, you need:
An Intel-based Macintosh computer with a built-in or USB keyboard and a built-in trackpad or USB mouse
Mac OS X 10.4.6 or later
The latest firmware update available for your Intel-based Mac
At least 10 GB of free space on your startup disk (single partition)
A full, single-disc version of Windows XP Home Edition or Professional with Service Pack 2 or later
Important: Your Windows XP installation disc must include Service Pack 2 (SP2). You cannot install an earlier version of Windows and upgrade it to Windows XP, nor install an earlier version of Windows XP and update it with SP2 later. See below for more information.
Note: Boot Camp Beta does not include Windows XP. You must provide your own, properly licensed,Windows XP Service Pack 2 installation disc.
Boot Camp Assistant (will be installed in /Applications/Utilities/)
A blank, recordable disc (to create the Macintosh Drivers CD) _________________ Lead me not into temptation for I shall find it myself |

Boot Camp worked fine here too! if you dont have sp2 just slipstream your version to it.
If you plan on acessing your windows folders thru OS X make sure that 2nd partition is not larger than 32gb (partC). for some reason this install doesn't recognise FAT32 partition larger than 32 gigs

Thats because FAT32 is limited to 32gb as a max, anything above that you have to use NTFS. _________________ Everyone makes mistakes. Thats why pencils have erasers. |

With Boot Camp, can XP be installed on an external drive, such as a miniStack _________________ 1.42GHz Mac mini / 1GB DDR / 80GB HD / Panasonic UJ-845-B 8X DL DVD±RW / 10.4 "Tiger"

That's a good question. If it was, I'd consider it. |

Apparently, you can't do an install of Win xp on an external drive with Boot Camp. There were at least two postings on Macintouch here that noted this couldn't be done. _________________ Mini 1: 2.3 ghz Core i5; 8 gb RAM, Corsair 240gb SSD, 500 gb Seagate XT

So, you put your OS X main install on the MiniStack, and put a small OS X partition and a decent-sized WinXp partition on the Mac mini's internal drive.
No problem. OS X is faster on the external anyway. |
