Near Richmond; I saw that they have a store at the Short Pump Town Center. Looks convenient to get to; I thought I'd stop in and try out their Minis. Unfortunately, I would be depending on Rosetta for most of my Apps; MS Office, JMP (stats program), and Deltagraph (charting program). I'm assuming I would find Office on the Minis in the Apple Store, so I could at least get to try a few things with Word, Excel and PowerPoint. I would not expect a boost in these programs with a new Mini, but I'm looking more towards the future. _________________ Mini 1: 2.3 ghz Core i5; 8 gb RAM, Corsair 240gb SSD, 500 gb Seagate XT

Ditto there. I also have 1GB of RAM and boot off a faster external hard drive... Seems like the old stealth Mini isn't so bad after all... _________________ Vote for me, and your wildest dreams will come true.. - Pedro Sanchez, "Napoleon Dynamite" |

I don't even boot off a FW drive and am satisfied, maybe a 100/120 GB ATA 2'5 7200 drive in the future... _________________ ___________________Jim©

Thanks much for the bench comparo.
Just to make sure I get it...Am I likely to see significantly reduced time using iMovie to render movies if I move up to the Core Duo 1.66? I do not need a new monitor, but would there be a significantly greater advantage in moving to a new iMac Core Duo 1.83 (17")?
Finally, a little item...is the Intel noisier than the old G4 unit?
Thanks!

The intel iMac is essentially silent if that helps. Only DVDs make any noise - the fans haven't come on even once in 2 months of ownership.
I don't think you'll see much performance difference from 1.83 vs 1.66Ghz. _________________ iMac intel CoreDuo 17" 1Gb

Thanks...Do you think the performance difference from the old MIni 1.42 G4 to the Core Duo 1.66 in iMovie will be substantial?

Not quite answering your question but from what I've read although the iMM may be faster in tasks such as rendeing the killer component appears to be RAM and the more of it the batter. Moe's MacWorld link suggests the iMM is quite a bit faster than the PPC for iMovie around 40%ish _________________ iMac intel CoreDuo 17" 1Gb

Actually, it's quite a bit better than that...
2:02/1:15 = 2.033/1.25 = 1.63 or 163% as fast (63% faster) on iMovie aged filter (does the same job in 61.5% of the time)
But where the Core Duo really ruled was rendering with Cinema 4D XL
4:28/1:26 = 4.466/1.433 = 3.11 or 311% as fast (does the same job in 32% of the time) _________________ Moe

| I need suggestions for speeding up a G4 Mac mini, it is slower than hell, granted it only has 512MB of RAM, any suggestions? |

RAM is the only thing that will boost that model, unless you want to switch to an external 7200RPM FireWire drive and boot from it. _________________ | Mac mini 2011 | Apple Thunderbolt Display | Apple keyboard and Magic TrackPad | 2Tb Time Capsule | Apple TV (3) | iPhone 4s |

I think most of the original 1.42GHz Mac minis shipped with 4200RPM hard drives, so upgrading to a 7200RPM drive will definitely give you some more zip. Upgrading to 1GB of RAM is a given. You should also think about selling the G4 and putting that money towards the new $599 mini. The RAM and better hard drive for the G4 may set you back somewhere around $200. It might be wiser to put that $200 towards an Intel Mac mini. _________________ 1.42GHz Mac mini
