Have an old mac mini 2008, 1.83, stock. Was unsure what to do with it, and was thinking to do a little project out of it.
Was initially thinking of just kicking out the airport minipcie and add an SATA controller, upgrade the cpu and ram and use it as a decent little NAS.
But, then I started thinking, there are MiniPCIe to PCIe converters (like this one: http://amfeltec.com/products/flexible-minipci-express-to-pci-express-adapter/), and there are PCIe splitters/extenders.
Something like that would, theoretically allow for adding an extra SATA card (standard size PCIe), and any other PCIe card one would want. Ideally, I'd like to add 2 cards, 1 sata (for 3.5 drives), and dual/quad NIC.
another option I consider is a minipcie splitter (2 way):
coupled with dual nic:
and sata controller:
Of course this will never fit in the old box, but that is of no concern. I guess my question here is simply: would something like this even be feasible?
