Apple Unveils iMac with Intel Processor
Tuesday January 10, 2005
Apple today unveiled the new iMac featuring Mac OS X running on the new Intel Core Duo processor, delivering performance that is up to twice that of its predecessor. The widely praised iMac design now features dual-core processors, a built-in iSight video camera for video conferencing out-of-the-box, and the breakthrough media experience of Front Row with the Apple Remote for a simple, intuitive and powerful way for consumers to enjoy their content from across the room.
Starting at $1,299, every new iMac comes with iLife '06, the next generation of Apple's award-winning suite of digital lifestyle applications featuring major new versions of iPhoto, iMovie HD, iDVD, GarageBand and introducing iWeb, a new iLife application that makes it super-easy to create amazing websites with photos, blogs and Podcasts and publish them on .Mac for viewing by anyone on the Internet with just a single click. The new iMac is shipping today, and is he first of a new generation of Macs featuring Intel processors that Apple will roll out during 2006.

I think everyone was. I saw some reference on one of the rumor sites stating that they had predicted earlier that the iMac would be released with an intel chip, but I don't remember ever hearing that! It was always Mini and iBook.
I'd be pretty pissed if I had purchased a G5 iMac within the last few months. I ebay'd my Mini (shipped it to the buyer this morning on my way to work!) and only lost about $75 on it (including the 1GB Ram upgrade I installed into it). I'd been pretty sure that unless they really upgraded the Mini's specs, I would probably buy an iMac G5. Now, unless the refurb/closeout/used iMac G5's are selling for under $1000, then I will go with the Intel-based iMac for sure since it would only be $1199 for me (education discount). Even though i sold my Mini thinking I'd get another upgraded intel mini (or the 1.5ghz model at worst), after spending some time with an iMac G5 yesterday at CompUSA and noticing how much faster it was, even with only 512MB of RAM, I'm definitely not going back to the Mini. It's a cool computer and a cheap(er) way into the Mac world, but it's a bit slow for my tastes. Even with max ram and 7200rpm firewire boot drive. So all in all I'm pretty happy with today's iMac announcement.
I'm just glad I didn't jump the gun and buy a G5 iMac last night. I was considering it because there was no indication that an intel iMac would be announced today. |

I spoke way too soon.....check out the refurb deals on apple.com. Excellent deals on refurb iMacs. Man, I may go with a 20" now instead of the 17" : )

I think you gotta go with the 20"! Those are some sweet prices...
As for the iMac getting updated, I am not surprised. I really did not think that they would put a dual core Yonah proc in the Mini due to the price point.. It really makes more sense for the higher-end Macs to get the best processors.
I am predicting single core Yonah's for the mini and the ibook sometime this summer, and possible a high-end dual proc Mini if we are lucky 
My ReplayTV just died on me last night, so I thought it might be a sign that the new media Mini might be released after all
Looks like I may have to wait to replace it for awhile....

I think the imacs would look a lot better with the cinema display chassy and the elctronics directly behind it. I really don't like that big white block under the screen. Does that bother anyone else? It just feels like there is screen missing!

The same thing bothers me. I'm also not that crazy about it being glossy white. I think the 20" looks a little better than the 17", but it still looks out of place. I can't afford a 20" anyways. I would rather the iMac be a little thicker and have a thin bezel on the bottom. |

The look has grown on me. Initially I was really disappointed with the design. The blocky part, reminds me of Jay Leno's chin. One thing I do like about it, is the screen is pretty high because of the space the block takes up. good for ergonomics, bad for bald guys (iSight camera angle ). I also don't like the glossy look. It reflects too much light. |

| I had a 20" imac g5, it doesn't reflect light. Neither does the ibook, it has a more high quailty than ibook type body to it. There is not a hint of glare and the light from my window used to hit if every morning and I had no problems with it. |

The "chin"  sort of bothered me at first. I don't even notice it anymore.

I'm 6'3" so the reflection is being exaggerated by me looking down on the display and the bright fluorescent lighting in the stores reflecting back. I'd imagine while sitting in my own home, where I can control the lighting I would not be bothered by the reflective properties.
I don't think I will run out and buy an iMac. My plan was to upgrade to a PowerMac. I already have a Cinema Display. Since upgrading my mini to 1GB (great improvement). I might just stick with it and buy an external hard drive and LaCie DVD burner with litescribe.
All I know is I already have way too much computer clutter, yet I'll never stop buying .
The mini has been the most enjoyable computer I have ever owned. |

I second theBattler.
The iMac looks real nice in all black, kind of wished they released them in color options or at least glossy black, like the iPods. |

I like white because it matches all my stuff, but black or anodized aluminum with white sides would be very cool.

| I have the same problem I have a 20" Wide Dell already, with a mini, so an Imac has never been an option, I kinda wish Mac would abandon or at least offer an alternative that's not an all in one unit |
