Hi
My son has a mid 2012 Macbook Pro unibody he damaged badly the upper case.
He have been using it for a while with no problem.
I found a good deal on the Craigs list for the same mbp with a dead logic board.
I decided to get it to swap the logic boards from one to the other.

What I did was take out the dead logic board (it had some green above the battery connector, I assume it got wet but not sure) from the mbp with a good body, undid the good logic board from one with the bad body , and installed it as well as his original hard drive.
After installing his original battery, I noticed that it was not starting however it did with the power supply.

I noticed that the back light was not working right and a lot of keys from 1 to 8 and from Q to O as well as the cap lock were not working.
The battery charge indicator was not working as well, I swapped it.

I thought the problem might come from the SMC that I need to reset, but it does not look that I can do it.
Does the SMC can have an effect on the keyboard? Should I change it as well? Thanks for your answer.

Nope sounds like you damaged the board when you tried to swap the board.

Thanks for your answer.
I did not force on anything. I reformatted the internal HDD this morning. it started and function but still not all the letters of the keyboard works. I was wondering if it exist another way to reset the SMC. Can I do it with an external keyboard or can I remove the battery and do it like you do it for the laptops with removable batteries?
I can put it back in the old (damaged casing) which I am trying to avoid.
Maybe I did not put the keyboard zif cable all the way, I am lost...
Ps right now, if I turn it off with no battery, it start when I replug it and open the lid

You could try two things.

1. reseat the keyboard ribbon cable

2. go to www.ifixit.com and look through the tutorial section there on how to take the machine apart and put it back together correctly

Thanks, I tried, it does not work. I guess I can do it again. I wish I could find a way to reset SMC and PRAM with an external keyboard.
