Hi from Ireland!

I need more storage on my mid 2011 mac mini, but don't want to spend much. I use my mini for graphic design and home theater mainly, but also lots of family photos and movies. I already have the OEM 500gb SSD, so was wondering if an external firewire drive would suffice. I will be using it mainly to keep old design jobs and family photos on.

Thanks in advance.
Tom

Firewire externals work very well for me, I use several.
I would not expect you should have any problem using one for your needs.

If you are just storing old design jobs and family photos, I would look at getting a USB 3 drive. It will be more affordable than a FW drive.

FW may be twice as fast for today, but 6X slower on your next machine that has USB 3.

Being you are just using it as an archive drive the benefit of FW800 over USB 2 isn't worth the extra cost today to lose substantial performance down the road.

I also have several FW drives but I'd be wary going firewire now especially for long term storage. USB3 is become more the norm and on Mac's its likely to be USB3 and thunderbolt going forward.

I would go for a Gigabit-connected NAS, if it's for archive, long-term storage, central backup; and long-term future-proofability. (Did I make up a word there?)
