Thanks to this forum I kinda figured out how to install things on my new Mac mini.

Something goes into my download stack, I dbl click it to open and .... some stuff installs into my Applications folder, while some stuff I drag to my Applications folder. Pretty sure I'm getting the hang of it.

Uninstall is as simple as dragging from Applications folder to Trash?

And.... I have several .dmg files in my downloads stack. I understand I don't need them any more if I've installed the program. Can I just copy them off to my external drive and hang on to them in case I have to reinstall? I mean, is that what most folks do or do you just go download everything again if you have to do a fresh install?

Yes. I tend to keep the dmg's in a separate Downloads folder on an external drive. It saves downloading them again should you want to reinstall for any reason.

Sometimes developers only make available the current version of their apps, so if you have an issue keeping old of the dmg can save you.

I also tend to rename them to include the version numbers of the app.

Is there any way to change the user name?
I set up but clicked too soon so my user name became user1.
I want to change it without a lot of problems with applications or whatever.

Just go to System Preferences, Users & Groups and create another user with the name you want. Then delete the "user1" account. Oh...save your files first as ANY documents you have within the user1 directory will be deleted.
