I have a late 2009 Mac Mini running Snow Leopard. I have an external Western Digital disk connected via Firewire 800 that I use for Time Machine backups. Can I use the Mavericks installer from the App Store to install it on the external disk and then boot from that disk when needed?

My constraint: I develop Java software and I need Snow Leopard to run Apple Java 6 and a newer OS version to run Oracle Java 7 (and soon, Java 8). Some days I need Snow Leopard, some days I'll need Mavericks.

The 2009 Mac mini is the oldest Mac mini that is still supported by Mountain Lion (http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/ ). I doubt that Maverick will support the 2009 model out of the box however someone may have some workaround to do so.

I've been running OS X on an external drive to back up Windows on the internal drive and yes, you can run OS X on an external drive happily. Limiting factor is the speed of the Firewire although it will help if you use a SSD in the Firewire enclosure.

My daughter is running OS X on a MacBook Pro from an external Firewire Raid (Newertech mini) - the laptop is from her work and only has Windows 7 running on it. In this way her private stuff does not get onto the work computer.

I suggest that if Mountain Lion is able to do what you want it to do that you grab a copy before it disappears after the release of Maverick.
