I have been using an external hard drive connected to my 10.5.8 machine for about a month. When I search for a file or folder the results don't have it. This happens regularly. I know which files are there. I use the search box to avoid digging through folders to get to the file.

I know that I must first click the drive and wait for a finder window to open which contains the contents of the external drive. Spotlight seems to not even go into the external drive for data unless I open that drive first.

Today I wanted to find a folder. I know the name of the folder and typed it into the search box. Many things came up but not what I wanted. Next I manually searched the drive and located the sub-folder holding the files I wanted. I backed up one level and tried searching for it again. Still the thing I want won't show up in the search.

What is wrong? I've read about others saying that Spotlight wasn't so great and that they used a different filing system. Maybe now I understand one reason they say that. Can somebody explain why Spotlight can't find things in my external drive?

Thank you.

I can't explain it but, I do know that it used to work much better years ago. I quit using it and came up with a more methodical way of storing all my files so I can access them easily.

I don't know why you are having the problem, but you could try re-indexing the drive.

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2409

OnyX also has the ability of deleting the spotlight index and then when you start up again the drive gets re-indexed. I'd try that after if step 1 doesn't work for you.

Spotlight was designed to search files on your main hard drive not really for external searching there are programs that search external hard drives and internals for 10.5 search google. there use to be tons for 10.5

I've always found that Spotlight, will by default index and search all attached HDD's unless I specifically add them to Spotlight- preferences-privacy list.
