So I've ordered the new mini and am now preparing the plan to migrate.

New mini has a 256SSD and a 4tb thunderbolt external

So what I plan on doing is setting the home directory up on the thunderbolt, system on SSD

Now I'm coming from an iMac with 1tb internal and my iTunes library on a 2tb fw800 so I was planning on using migration assistant from time machine backup to "restore" on to the mini. Then in iTunes set directory path to home directory on the TB drive from the FW drive

Does his seem like a reasonable plan?

I'm actually going to try this today with an older mini

I have the same question. (And I'm considering ordering the mini with a 256 GB SSD instead of the stock 5400 HDD.)

Is using Migration Assistant the best way to load applications? Does a lot of junk also get loaded, such as pref file for things that have been deleted (old software)?

Is it better to just load documents, pictures, music, etc. and load software from original disks?

Personally I've never liked the ideal of using migration assistant and have always done it manually and never had a problem.

I do keep good backups and I also keep my files tidy and organised. I use Chronosync to back up each set of files and have separate chronosync scripts backing up my Documents, my dropbox, pictures, downloads, music etc. So restoring my system isn't too difficult.

Apps I install manually as well, either from the downloads folder backups or now from the App Store. I prefer to keep a copy of all DMG's where possible so prefer that method to the app store.
