I've been using it a bit on my Mac mini with the new stuff from Plex. It's actually been kind of cool. I was just wondering what you guys thought of it. Windows 8 that is.

At this point I haven't upgraded Win 7 on my laptop Boot Camp. Currently don't see any advantage to doing so. Might when it is fully supported by Boot Camp, but even then I would need to fiddle with a machine loaded with it to see if it makes any sense for me.

I like it on touch-enabled systems, but not so much on a regular desktop or laptop. So I would say that it's just okay. It will be interesting to see what "Blue" means for Windows 8 though. It could throw it over the edge into being something special.

I use a Mac; I have no need for Windows 8, 7, Visa or XP.

Vista, Y-Guy, Vista. I am trying to have no use for Visa either! 
I installed the RC version a bit back on my peecee. I pretty much went right to the classic desktop, found an app to do the Start menu stuff that was missing, and had to Google to see how to shut it off when I was done playing with it.
The apps I use will never be in the Windows8 store so I can't use the Metro, or whatever it's called today, interface. I find on my peecee that the Metro interface is not really usable. It sure is pretty though!
Oddly, it's still functioning, so I'm not sure if MS gave it a termination date.
Anyway, it supposedly has better support for some of the functions in the CPU than Windows7 does.
A coworker has a Surface RT. In that environment, the Metro interface seems natural, and fairly intuitive.

| I've been using it at work since June last year. It's no better or worse than 7. I've helped folks get acclimated - they usually need some tips on dealing with not having the start button and some navigation tips and then they are ok. Some of the basic Modern UI apps suck. Mail is worthless. |

That's interesting. Mine was to expire on the 15th of January, so I decided to upgrade while it was on sale for $40.
My feelings on Windows 8 are sort of mixed.
I don't really care for the modern desktop, but it's not completely bad either. And the classic desktop is just so lacking without the Start menu. I am using Start8 by Stardock to bring that sort of functionality back though. I just wish that it didn't have to come from a third party software company.
So, overall... It's just okay. Mountain Lion is still my primary OS though. |

I'm pleasantly surprised with Windows 8. I don't personally have anything running it, but my wife just purchased a Samsung Series 5 all-in-one for our daughter. I think she only paid like $699 for it at Best Buy. It's not the greatest of machines, but the touch stuff is pretty responsive. I've been messing around on it a bit here and there. My biggest gripe about Windows 8 would probably be the stripping down of the traditional desktop. I feel like it's really a hollow shell of itself. Even though it feels a little more snappy. I also don't care for how it throws you out to the modern desktop for control panels and such. But, all in all, it's not too bad.
I do know one thing though. Apple needs some touch screen enable Macs soon. My wife said that she saw kids going up to the iMacs in Best Buy and trying to do stuff on the screen. No response and they just walked right away. I'm not saying that's what we all are looking for in systems, but it's clearly the future. And I will say that Microsoft appears to have the early lead in this department. I would imagine that Apple could come in with something that shakes up that lead though. Like with something that totally combines best of iOS and Mac OS X. |

We've seen Apple come late to the game time and time again, only to turn the industry on it's head. ie. iPod (plenty of MP3 players before the iPod), iPhone (plenty of phones before the iPhone), iPad (plenty of touch enabled devices before the iPad), digital camera (plenty of digital cameras before the iPhone), GPS (plenty of GPS devices before the iPhone) etc., etc. etc...
I have faith in Apple doing things right, when the time is right. M$ may have a head start, but that doesn't mean they've won the race. |
