Apple has released the MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.7 via their Mac App Store and website for direct download. According to the company, this update addresses a rare issue on some mid-2010 to early 2011 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pro models where a battery that has accumulated more than 1000 charge cycles may unexpectedly shut down or stop functioning. The update weighs in at 1MB and requires Mac OS X 10.6.8, 10.7.5 or 10.8.2.

| I have one of the models, but I'm so far away from 1000 charge cycles. In fact, I'm only sitting at about 75 cycles. I thought it would have been higher based on my usage, but that was it. |
