I just recently updated my (given to me last year) mac mini. After the update install my MM boots but the video only comes on every 30 seconds or so and only for about a second. Do you think if I reinstalled the OS that this might go away or is there another way to fix this?

Thanks

Have you tried booting in Safe Mode?

I'll try booting into safe mode. I'll get some info on the Mac so I know a little more.

Thanks for the info

Tried booting into safe mode (shift key) but i still get the screen with the apple, get the loading thingy on the screen and after a few seconds the screen goes black and the system continues to load. I know this cause every few seconds i'll get a glimpse of the screen and can see the desktop complete with icons.

I'm not sure what else to do? I don't have a copy of the OS anywhere I normally use PC.

Any ideas?

How about some more information?

What mini is it?

What did it have on it before you updated?

What did you update it to?

I finally got to boot into safe mode and now I can see my screen! So I went into my settings and I have:

OS X 10.9.2 (13C64)
Proc Intel 2.26 Ghz Core 2 Duo
2 Gb of 1067 Mhz DDR3 Ram
and a Nvidia GeForce 9400 256 Mb

That's all I can tell you.

I'm not sure what I should do now that I am in Safe Mode but I am not going to turn the unit off till I find out what's going on.

I would suggest that you back up your user.

One more thing, if you click on the apple in the upper left corner and click on About This Mac, and then click on More Info... what is the model identifier?

Since Apple went away from physical media I really don't know how to do a clean install of an OS. So I don't know if I can help you with doing a clean install, which is what I would recommend.

Like you suggested...

I'll backup my user then do a system restore and hope that the bugs work themselves out of the MacMini.

Thanks Smithcraft

I'll keep you posted

So mt mac mini was in safe mode one day and then seemed to have restarted in regular mode and back to the really intermittent video problem.
I've been trying to boot into safe mode for the past week but to no avail. I might just install Ubuntu cause Mac just doesn't make it that easy to get a new OS installed.

Thanks for the help anyway. I guess I'm done with Mac for now.
