It really depends on what you are doing with your Mini.

If youíre doing the average web surfing, etc.
Bean - Small, fast word processor
1Password - Password management/logins
DropBox - file sharing across devices
Little Snitch - Outgoing Firewall system (1st thing I install)
Firefox - with NoScript, FlashBlock & AdBlock
Perian - Itís no longer updated but helps view various Movies
VLC - If QuickTime canít play it then VLC can.
Onyx - File Maintenance, install later once you get comfortable with your mac

Video Ripping/Converting
MDRP/MacDVDRipperPro - Rips DVDs (or try Ripit)
Handbrake - converts those DVDs into useable files

I would install Sophos which is free and a good app to use for searching for any type of virus. Also VLC for watching videos.

I would practice good net hygiene and not worry about installing Sophos or any other Mac virus software as there still are no Mac virus in the wild.

A little primer for you. By your standards I think it would be hard to argue that Sophos is safe. Best course of action is common sense.

I think ez061111 point is you don't need either and your system will run better without.

I don't normally run any antivirus and haven't since I started using a Mac. However I have started using a simple scanner which I update and run every month or so just to be sure I'm not going to inadvertently pass something to windows friends or to my work machine also running windows.

This isn't a background scanner and only runs when I start it so there is no overhead to having it installed.

check out iAntiVirus on the app store.
