Seagate Buys LaCie for $186 Million

Seagate today announced that it is buying LaCie for $186 million. The deal brings LaCie's line of premium-branded storage solutions, network-attached storage solutions and software offerings to Seagate's array of mainstream consumer storage products. It also accelerates Seagate's growth into the consumer storage markets in both Europe and Japan.
"Seagate has a strong commitment to the growing consumer storage market and bringing the most dynamic products to market. LaCie has built an exceptional consumer brand by delivering exciting and innovative high-end products for many years. This transaction would bring a highly complementary set of capabilities to Seagate, significantly expand our consumer product offerings, add a premium-branded direct-attached storage line, strengthen our network-attached storage business line and enhance our capabilities in software development," said Steve Luczo, Seagate chairman, president and CEO. "We are also excited that Philippe, who is a true visionary and leader in the consumer storage business, would join Seagate to run our consumer storage products organization."
"With the proliferation of devices and content being shared and stored today, consumer demand for high-quality branded storage solutions continues to grow," said Philippe Spruch, LaCie's chairman and CEO. "We are excited about the potential for this combination to benefit customers and employees by creating significant scale and opening up new markets. We look forward to making the resources of a much larger company available to our customers around the world."
The deal is expected to be completed in the third quarter of this year.

Interesting. I just hope they keep producing quality enclosures. I think that's always where LaCie separates itself from the others. At least in my eyes. _________________ 1.42GHz Mac mini

Well there goes that option. I've just had to many bad Seagate drives to trust them. _________________ iMac 24" 2.4 GHz 4GB | Logitech S530 | Z-2300 speakers | NewerTech Guardian MAXimus RAID

WD and Hitachi drives have been far more reliable for me. The latter also owned by WD now. _________________ 2.4GHz MacBook Pro/4GB/320GB HD

Ditto
How sad, I could always count on the fact that LaCie products were among the best.
Seagate? Yikes. You can bet that LaCie will become just a mediocre product like those awful things that Seagate builds. _________________ '08 MacMini C2D/2.0/RAM4GB

I'll play devils advocate. I agree Seagate hasn't had a great reputation in the last few years, arguably longer.
But LaCie, dating back to the first drive I bought from them in the early 90's hasn't either. They make incredibly beautiful/innovative things that I finally stopped buying. I have a veritible junk yard (8 units) of LaCie drives that have burned out power supplies (2), fried internals (5) and a network storage device they they were unwilling to fix (1). All shortly after warranty dates expired.
In retrospect, my last Seagate drive, 2.5" Seagate Momentus 7200 rpm 500GB, still runs like a little champ. It's no longer an internal for me but a back-up, but still has a happy life.
From my vantage point, only time will tell what will happen to LaCie. It could be a case of the larger corporation eroding the brand equity or it could remain the same. _________________ 2.0 GHz i7 Mini 8 GB RAM, OWC Merc Extreme SSD & Samsung Spinpoint
