Apple Releases Java Update to Remove Flashback Malware
Thursday, April 12, 2012
Posted by: Staff

Apple has released Java for OS X 2012-003 via their Software Update Utility. According to the company, this Java security update removes the most common variants of the Flashback malware. It also configures the Java web plug-in to disable the automatic execution of Java applets. Users may re-enable automatic execution of Java applets using the Java Preferences application. If the Java web plug-in detects that no applets have been run for an extended period of time, it will again disable Java applets. Java for OS X 2012-003 is recommended for all Mac users with Java installed.

Apple has posted direct downloads for the new Java updates on their website. Here's the one for Lion and the one for Snow Leopard.

This also blocks SubPub so you really need to install it.

I haven't been and I manage my two home units and one at work and two at a youth center.

I actually disabled Java on my iMac out of curiosity, so far I haven't found a need for it so far.

Yeah, Java and Flash are well on the road to becoming afterthoughts. Especially when their security risks outweigh necessity.

I really figured that more apps or something would need Java so far though I've had no problems, then again I don't do any online banking or other sites that might want it. Keep waiting for one of my apps to balk at it being tuned off though.
