Hi Everyone,
I got my new mac mini yesterday, set it up, installed applications and copies my data over. Everything seemed pretty good. But when I switched it on this morning the apple logo comes up on screen but nothing else happens (no spinning wheel or anything else). I ran disk utility from the install cd and the verify and repair failed with an error. Any ideas before I wipe it and start again?

Thanks

Crying or Very sad

Do a clean install and pray! I did a clean install and it took what seemed to be an unusually long time so make sure you have the time to do it. Good Luck!

I do an average of 1 mac rebuild (and about 5 pc's) a week at work so I know to set aside at least twice the time I would have expected the job to take! I'll try the rebuild tonight and see what happens

Other than it not coming up, what kind of reasons do you normally rebuild a Mac for? I've not had to rebuild my Windows machines either (yeah, yeah, I know) so I'm unsure of the signs other than what you described.

Well! I returned home and started the mini from the restore CD. Set it running and after an hour it has completed 3% and says it will take another 4hrs 35min to complete. I suspect I have a faulty drive!

I'll pack it up and call apple, hope they fix it quick - I'll be creating a riot if they take weeks for it!

Sad

Apple customer service is pretty good - called them this evening and the customer service rep went out of his way to help. They have arranged to collect the old machine tomorrow and are hoping to get me another BTO machine in a few days. Can't complain at that!

Bit happier now but still annoyed it didn't work. Smile Cool

That's a bummer man! Did they say how long it would take to get another one?

They said a couple of days - I know the waiting list is about 2 weeks so I think that this one is being given priority as I have already waited two weeks for the first machine.

Hate to burst your bubble, but the wait time is now down to 5-7 days.

The saga continues. The machine was taken to Amsys in Surrey where they did the basic tests - no faults found. They then dismantled it and did further tests and found a hard disk fault (I don't know exactly what). The offer was a repair or a replacement. Being an IT engineer I went for the replacement (you can never tell if a replacement drive will fail again if the fault is with another component rather than the drive). Amsys recon that the replacement will take about 10 days. I am now waiting on Apple emailing me with the new order number.
