Having heeded the warnings about preventing unwanted internet attacks, it has been the practice to leave Firewall on.

The O2 Thomson Gateway router has its own firewall.

Having 'downgraded' to a 2011 mini running Lion 10.7.0 and then 10.7.2, other Snow Leopard Macs on my home / office network have not been able to make a connection whilst the Firewall has been switched on. Turn it off and all connects fine.

Reported the problem ( along with other printing problems ) to Apple Care and it was recommended to turn it off and leave it off.

Quote " in the Apple Centre, it is always turned off and there are no reported problems."

Also " Mac's other security measures help against internet attacks ".

We trust in the professionals and hope that the advice is sound, however, why is the firewall there in the first place ??

Safe browsing habits might be better than a firewall, but there aren't any other protections that I know of in OS X.

I've never had a problem with the firewall in OS X, but then again, I haven't tried it in 10.6.

thanks SC.

Yes you are right about where you fish, you'll can never be sure what you will catch.

I think it is ( reported Firewall block ) how Lion works, since it was not a problem when SL Macs were talking to one another.

I was just looking at MacInTouch, and one of the lead news items is about a bit of malware that part of what it does is disable the anti-malware bits in OS X. So I guess there is some sort of feeble protective software in OS X.

The more I hear about Lion, the more I'm glad I haven't invested in it!
