Looking to buy a new retina display MBP in the next month. Seems the 15.4" ones are the better deal right now...but I've always loved that 13.3" form factor.
Quad-core i7 with 16GB ram would be nice for my mobile VM lab.
Decisions, decisions . . .

Wait till march or April Apple is coming out with newer models than now. |

I'm not a big fan of chasing releases...unless there is a specific feature I need.

I was hoping for some 15" refurbs to show up. I was thinking that would be my entrance point at a discount.
My best friend and neighbor has one though. The screen is most impressive and the performance is admirable. It's also really thin and feels better on your lap than the MacBook Air. Like from a balance standpoint.
That being said, there are a lot of reports out there about ghosting on the screens with this generation. Which is something that he has mentioned to me several times. I also have a feeling that Apple will be adjusting prices if they do away with normal res screens in the lineup.
So... without a refurb type discount available, and having those ghosting issues out there lingering around, I'm more inclined to wait for the next generation. It's not so much about chasing features. It's more about Apple ironing out the kinks with a second generation model.
This also allows time for more retina-based apps to come to market.
Just some random thoughts... |

| Ghosting, burn in and HD 4000 graphics can't handle the resolution. Those are the reasons why I'm waiting. |

I got the upgrade 15.4" ... I can't imagine using anything else now.

I'm still waiting. Will probably pull the trigger soon. But likely on a 13.3" model. More pixel density and I have always loved the 13.3" form factor. The one time I owned a 15.4" MBP, I simply didn't like the size. Quad core would be nice, but I have an alternative solution to my mobile VM lab needs, so not as critical.
I will probably purchase two maxed out 13.3" rMBPs in the next couple of weeks (one for the wife and one for me). Then I can look at passing the MB CE and my Mac mini on to others that need an influx of Mac into their lives.

I'm looking to get one as well. A friend told me that Best Buy has been clearing out the old 13" model with the 256GB SSD. He said they've had them for as low as $1169 as an in-store "Manager's Special". Going to keep my eye out for one. I agree with you on the size too. There is something about the 13" that just feels right. It doesn't hurt that the PPI is a little higher too. I just can't decide on getting one, as the Haswell-based models are probably going to be much better. Plus, they will probably be clearing out the current Ivy-Bridge models. I know one thing though. It will be a model with the 256GB SSD. I'm not messing around with the 128GB model.

I'm waiting to see what they do at the WWDC in June. I think it might be smarter to wait for Haswell now. It's supposed to bring much better battery life and graphics power, which is important powering all of those pixels. They could also discount the current models and refurbs even more. Perhaps even go with an all Retina MacBoo Pro lineup. Which probably means a reduction in price as well.
I do have a question though. Are they displays in the current models being made by Samsung? If so, I hope they keep using them in the next generation or whatever. I still worry about the display panels from Sharp. They never seem quite as nice. That might have me leaning towards one of these models at a discount or closeout. Even with whatever Haswell brings to the table. |

Believe it or not, I actually decided to pull the trigger on two 13.3" cMBPs instead (2.9GHz i7). I really liked the idea of the retina display...but at the end of the day, the wife and I use our SuperDrives quite a bit, I have a need for Ethernet, we can upgrade to 16GB, and put in whatever SSDs we want.
Plus I still really like the classic design.
We'll see what Apple does with the MBP in the next couple if years.

I understand your reasoning. Who knows, Apple may totally discontinue the cMBP line-up just like they did with the 17" model, which left a lot if people wishing they had bought a 17" model when they had the chance. Same thing happened when they discontinued the iMac with the built in SuperDrive.
I'm sure they will last you for years and they may remain the last upgradable laptops Apple will ever offer. |

I actually thought to myself, "would I be bummed if they discontinued the cMBP?". When I realized the answer was "yes", I knew that was the right call.

We'll see how long I hold on to mine. I have a habit of changing things up quite often. But my wife will definitely have hers for quite a while.

Minus the screens, I think they are better machines. I also like that you can still upgrade the RAM and HDD without them being soldered down to the board. Well, the SSD in the Retina isn't soldered down. It's just not a typical 2.5" SSD. So, congrats... I hope they work out well for you!
