LaCie Shipping Little Big Disk Thunderbolt Series
Tuesday, September 20, 2011
Posted by: Staff
And so it begins. LaCie has started shipping out their Little Big Disk Thunderbolt Series of external hard drives. Featuring a pair of 2.5-inch drives in a Mac OS RAID configuration, the Little Big Disk Thunderbolt Series delivers stunning read speeds of more than 480MB/s in SSD and up to 190MB/s in HDD. They are available now from the Apple Store, with a 1TB HDD version priced at $400 and a 2TB HDD version at $500. There's no word on pricing or availability for a 240GB SSD version, but we'll keep you posted.
Update: Apple has apparently removed the 1TB and 2TB HDD versions from their online store. There are new listings now for 250GB ($900) and 500GB ($1500) SSD versions, with shipping estimates of 1-2 weeks.

The 2TB model only has 5400 rpm drives inside the darn thing. That really doesn't scream performance.
I would just love to have an empty 3.5" enclosure from like OWC or Macally. That's thunderbolt route I'd like to take. |

It's nice to see LaCie getting back to basics with this drive. As well as being first to market with a Thunderbolt drive. I've always been a fan of their products, but felt like they have been drifting lately with some strange looking products. _________________ 1.42GHz Mac mini

Nice. I should be able to play with one at work soon
I'm sure we will sell a few of these regardless of price. |

They're not cheap, but I actually thought they might cost more when the pricing was announced. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)

No way no how. They are obviously price gouging due to being one of the first out with a thunderbolt drive. Ultimately others will come out with Thunderbolt enclosures and the price will drop like a rock. I am waiting until sanity returns to this segment of the external HDD market. I just don't like being a sucker. _________________ Proud Cube owner. Oh, I also own a 2011 2.7ghz i7 Mac Mini. |

| Is the 7200 rpm setup even faster then new Mac Mini Server internal drives if they were striped? There is more bandwidth right? |

no . the 7200rpm drives are not faster then then two internal server ones. the internal drives can max at 90 plus 90 or 180 MB/s at a long read/write the internal ports can handle more then 400MB/s each.
so you can put in two fast ssds in a mini and stripe them and get speeds over 600MB/s
the lacie unit is very good for 2011 iMac users you can hook the 2 x 500 unit up as a boot drive and use the internal hdd as you backup. you have a faster bootdrive then the internal drive and the age old problem of a dead internal hdd is solved.
I manage to get a 2 x 500 lacie and a t-bolt cable for a total of 385 instead of 448 plus tax. i will look into dropping in 2 samsung ssds and building a 512gb ssd unit for about 950 total vs the lacie price of 1499 for a 500 gb total. _________________ 2010 Mm 2.4 C2D oem 320gb hdd 8gb ram

| I would love to have one, but will wait for the price to drop. It's also a bit hard to justify for me, since I also have a Windows machine with USB 3.0 - it be nice to use with Thunderbolt and USB 3. |

They also look to be pretty small too.
I would love to have one, but it's sort of early adopter pricing at this point. |

Is the external drive faster for the imac because it's 2 drives striped instead of 1? |

yes if you have a 2011 iMac with the 1tb or the 2tb hdd this lacie is a good deal quicker then the internal.. you can use the lacie as your bootdrive and clone it to the internal once a week as your backup.
for the mini if you are into diy it is less important because you can put any 2 drives you want into a mini and stripe them. most drives not all drives will stripe in a mini. _________________ 2010 Mm 2.4 C2D oem 320gb hdd 8gb ram
