I would like to have this question answered, please.
I use a 2009 Mini with Snow Leopard, and everything is fine here.
I don't have an account in Mac App Store and I don't need it, I am a long time Mac user (1992) and I have software enough at this point.
My question is: if something happens to my Mini and I decide to buy a new one (plus an external optical drive...), I will need to get an account in App Store to use my new computer that comes with Lion? Or, can I use it with no account but still need an account for online restore (re-download of the OS) or system updates? |

you will only need to sign up if you purchase the OS or apps from Apple. If you purchase a new computer, Lion will come preinstalled and you don't need to sign up for updates if you wish not to. _________________ 2.0 GHz i7 Mini 8 GB RAM, OWC Merc Extreme SSD & Samsung Spinpoint

Or you can clone the drive with superduper and use it to recover. _________________ 2010 Mm 2.4 C2D oem 320gb hdd 8gb ram

If you purchase a new mac it will come with the App Store version of the iLife programs and the only way to update them is through the App store.
I don't think that you need an App Store account to do a recovery of a 2011 mini. It only checks the serial number when you restore. It is possible that the machine has to be registered to an account but I haven't seen that as a requirement. |

saul you may be correct. I have a few 2011 minis. they can't use the apple usb lion stick as they have a special mac mini build and they have built in recovery info . I have not installed a 2011 mini via the net. I did an install to my macpro and paid the 30 bucks for it. you need an account for that. I have to kill a 2011 mini's hdd and see if I can get it to do a fresh install via the net with just my mini and no account. _________________ 2010 Mm 2.4 C2D oem 320gb hdd 8gb ram

| What build did the thumb drive install? I have 11B2118 on my mini. This was downloaded through Internet recovery. |
