First off this works for any hdd upgrade. Don't boot or use the new mini pull the hdd and clone it to you new drive. you then have a virgin recovery disk for your mini. the oem hdd that came with it.

Okay I grabbed a 2.3 base 2011 mini and dropped in a 256gb ssd from samsung. A link for the upgrade is posted.

It is much easier to put in a ssd or a hdd then the 2010. This is a nice fast machine with the ssd.

I only have 2gb ram in it I am waiting on 8gb ram but with 2gb ram it did a handbrake encode in 14 minutes vs 22 for a 2009 2.66 mac mini.

This machine can get a better hdd/ssd and 4gb to 8gb of ram as a diy mod and it is pretty good. In a week or two i will look into the 799 model.

Thanks, fun to watch. I knew you'd be one of the first crackin' at it. I'd love to upgrade to one in a little while.
I'd love a SSD+HDD build.
where can I go peruse prices on SSDs?

great photos!

I was thinking of buying the 2.5ghz base model and then upgrading to SSD and 2nd HDD. But where do u get the second hard drive SATA to logic board connection from for the 2nd drive?

Hi Philip, I noticed you used a Samsung 3Gb/s SSD--not the 6Gb/s variety. Is the newest mini not SATA revision 3? Just curious....

Finally, thanks for the excellent tear down photos/directions.

Those cookies are really good. I have a friend that is a vegan I tell him every desert that he has every found for me the was vegan had mediocre taste at best. I promised him I would make a vegan chocolate chip cookie that was good.

Flour is grounded organic almonds. 2 cups
The oil is kosher organic pecan oil. 3 oz
Trader Joe's organic vanilla. 1 tablespoon
Organic sea salt 1/4 tea spoon
organic baking soda 1/4 teaspoon
organic agave nectar 3 oz
one green and black organic chocolate bar dark 70% chop the chocolate into chips.

it is the fastest mini I have ever used

I don't game but I may sell this one on ebay and get the 2.5 model with the better graphics.

Boy if they gave the brick back they could put a quad 2.3 and a really good gpu in the box.
i think they want minis to become like legos in that adding a few together will give you a very powerful computer . time will tell. I do advise that anyone with an older mini should consider this one.

I found a place to purchase the bottom HD connector for a 2010 server model. It's a direct part from Apple and a bit pricey. I won't have it until next week, but my intention is to clone the existing 500 GB drive and when the connector arrives, move the original as data storage underneath the SSD.

The part is available here:

I will report back to this forum if there is interest...

I haven't done a detailed comparison with the teardown that ifixit did on the mid 2011 mac mini, but it seems like the video OWC made for the 2010 mac mini server HD upgrade is completely applicable to this model as well. Does this seem like the case to the rest of you?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3pQDDNsfsU

Thanks!

After watching this video I am inclined to wait for OWC to release an actual upgrade kit as I am sure they will. Thoughts?
