I need Java to access my bank's website. They say to look in the Apple menu under Software Update, but when I did I was not given the option to download Java. I understand that Macs require a special version of Java, so where can I get it?

Intel Mini, Tiger 10.4.11 Firefox.

It should be already installed, but its been a while since I used Tiger Question

I also don't use Firefox but in Safari there is an option to disable it. So it might be worth checking your settings in firefox or trying it with Safari.

Safari Preferences Panel

Thank you for the tip. I downloaded the package but an alert came up :
"Please run Software Update and install all previous java updates before installing this upgrade"

Software update has no option that I could see to let me do that. Do you know what can be done?

Does Software Update show any updates? Also, try Reset Ignored Updates to see if maybe you set it to ignore previously.

Yes, I had to Reset Ignored Update to be offered Java version 6 (80Mb!) then repeat the operation twice again to download versions 7 and 8!!! So I guess I can try now to install version 9.

Thank you for the suggestion.
