If you've been wondering about taking your new 2011 Mac mini past 8GB of memory, we have some good news. Other World Computing today announced, through its in-house MaxRAM testing lab, their first 12GB and 16GB OWC Memory Upgrade Kits for the new Mac mini. The OWC 12GB DDR3 1333MHz Memory Upgrade Kit (8GB + 4GB memory modules) is priced at $749.00. Then you have the OWC 16GB DDR3 1333MHz Memory Upgrade Kit (2 x 8GB memory modules), taking your Mac mini to the max, for $1399.99. Both kits are scheduled to start shipping out in around seven days.

What would be the practical use for this given the cost ?
I upgraded from 4GB to 8GB and it had a noticeable effect. I can't imagine that would be true going higher than 8. |

There really isn't a practical reason for going higher than 8GB. Nor in spending that kind of money.
In my book, 8GB gives you the most bang for the buck.

Wouldn't 16GB of memory cause a longer boot up time? I'd imagine it would take twice as long to do the memory test, relative to the time it would take if you only had 8GB of memory installed. I suppose it really doesnt matter in the grand scheme of things though.
It would be cool to have a maxed out mini though, just for bragging rights. |

Not necessarily. When I upgraded my Mac Pro to 24GB it took a bit longer to boot. My mini and my MBP both boot faster since they've been upgraded from 4 to 8GB.
Bragging rights like those would come at a ridiculous expense, IMHO.
Let's see, 16GB RAM upgrade for the Mini or a new iMac for $200 less. Hmmm, let me think on that one. |

If you can install the 16GB of $80 RAM from Fry's in your mini and have it operate, then I would happily eat my hat. Lowest price I've seen is currently about $1400, and it's at OWC...in this thread.
