|
|
Hi Mac Mini users!
This is my first post this forums although I have been watching 123 mac mini since I got the G4 1.42 ghz. Well I just recently migrated to the relatively new 2.4Ghz Intel, and there is really a huge difference, I am very happy with it.
I recently downloaded Lobotomo's Fan Control and I wanted to know what were the best / recommended settings for the mac mini. I am asking because the machine tends to get very warm when working with Photoshop CS5, it also gets warm when playing frets of fire (my only game).
I hope this question hasn't been asked before, but let me tell you I looked extensively on google before registering and asking, most other sites have settings for other macs, so I figure this is the best place. I did find what I thought were suitable settings, but now I am not sure:
Base Speed: 2000 RPM
Lower Threshold: 40.0 C (122 F)
Upper threshold: 70.0 C (156 F)
Also another question, I changed my settings to the ones above and I forgot to write my original settings somewhere else (I know I fucked up) is there a way to reset to factory settings?
Thank you for your time,
-Martin
PS: My Mac mini only has 2gb of ram, I will upgrade to 8gb in August hopefully |

http://www.lobotomo.com/products/FanControl/
un install instructions are on this link. since it is free you can just do it over and keep the settings.
I always tell everyone that lives in a hot place pay the 16 for single or the 25 for family and buy iStatmenus 3. My reasoning is the price is low your gear is costly.
http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/
this has far more controls since I have 3 macs I purchased family... this gives me 6 speed settings for my mac pro and controls each and every fan in my mac pro all 5 of them.
this gives me 5 speed settings for the iMac and allows every fan to be set I think 3 of them.
it gives 5 speed settings for the mini and the one fan. just something to think about _________________ 2010 Mm 2.4 C2D oem 320gb hdd 8gb ram

Your settings aren't bad, but your temps are a little off; 40C = 104F, 70C = 158F. My baseline speed is 1500rpm, bottom end at 50C top at 70C. Keeps computer cool without overworking the fan. _________________ Mac Pro 4,1 12GB ram

Thank you so much for your replies everyone!
After some searching around I found comment that criticizes Fan Control app because it messes around with the computer's firmware directly, I followed his uninstalling instructions:
1. delete smcfancontrol (if you already have this installed.)
2. delete imac fan control' or 'fan control' as described, deleting the daemon + pref. pane in the library folder
3. restart. now empty the trash can (that couldn't be deleted because files were being used). restart again.
4. after a clean restart. once at the desktop, do a SMC reset. you'll hear a long beep that'll confirm.
5. do a PRAM reset as you boot up. do this atleast twice. For a total of 3 startup beeps.
I had some problems doing the SMC reset as apparently the computer gives no signal to indicate the process was done correctly. I installed Istat widget and it gives me the temperature at C 35 and fans at 1807 rpm which I think should be just fine. I think I will stop messing with the temperature for now as I feel I could mess this computer up if I don't really know what I am doing.
Thanks again.
