How To KEEP TitanTV's FREE Show Guide for Elgato EyeTV

Elgato (USA) will be dropping their support
for the TV show guide "TitanTV".

When I upgraded EyeTV v2.5 too v3.x on the mini
it automatically switched me from "TitanTV"
too "TV Guide" without giving me a choice.
After about ten days I had grown to HATE
"TV Guide". It gives you a lot of USELESS
information. TitanTV gives you the right amount.
Not to much, just enough. Elgato stated that
TV Guides show info was more accurate.
I didn't find TitanTV's info all that inaccurate.

"TitanTV" also disappeared
from the "Drop Down" list of available Guides.
Elgato DOESN'T want you using TitanTV.

My iMac still had v2.5 so I still had TitanTV on
that Mac. I don't remember exactly how, but
with both Mac's side by side I was able to figure
out how to get TitanTV's Guide back on the
mini. (Don't ask me how, I don't remember
but it IS possible.)

Elgato is dropping TitanTV because it will no
longer be FREE to Elgato. So, Elgato is FORCING
everyone to switch to TV Guide. The problem is
TV Guide might be free to Elgato BUT, its NOT
FREE to us. Its $20.00 (USA) a year.

Don't you think it would make sense to let us,
the consumer, decide for our selves who's service
we would prefer to pay for?. I would rather pay TitanTV
$20 a year because I truly prefer TitanTV over TV Guide.

You can still get TitanTV's show info from
Al Gores internet on their web site but you
won't be able to set up a recording schedule for
your favorite TV shows and movies.

I hated Titantv back in the 2.0 days. The information was highly inaccurate, shows were in the wrong times, you didn't know what was HD/SD, you didn't know which ones were re-runs, channels were missing, and a ton of other stuff. Yes it was free but I was willing to pay for something that worked back then...

TVguide's data is more complete, yes there is a lot of info but the more the better especially for searching for programs to watch/record. Problem is that eyetv has been horrible at implementing the data and has been horrible at allowing us to consistently download the data.

Elgato has to make a move and create a product that works, if that means dumping Titantv and using TVguide then Im all for it. But as it stands now Elgato has some serious work to do and they need to do it fast. In all honesty, I wish there was another developer out there that would make an alternative, eyetv's fullscreen gui is ugly, clunky, and poorly designed.

I tried to watch TV on a PC some years
ago with XP Media Center. I used a Pinnacle
USB Tuner. To say it was HORRIBLE would
be an understatement.

When I discovered Elgato's EyeTV their was
no comparison to what was available to Windows.
I thought Windows/Pinnacle stunk really bad
and EyeTV was elegant.

Apparently things have changed. Shitsta, I mean
Vista is but a PAINFUL memory and Windows 7
is quite nice. I've been reading some very nice
things about Windows Media Center. Media Center
can play your TV shows natively with the right
hardware. I think, no extra program needed.

Since Elgato is shaking us down
it might be time to upgrade to Windows 7
instead of pay the ransom. With Win 7 we
could also rip Bluray's. What a concept!

CAN ANYONE WITH FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE
GIVE US INSIGHT?

Windows Media Center is so much better than eyeTV that they shouldn't be used in the same sentence. WMC has two problems: Microsoft and Windows.

The Microsoft problem is that if anything is broke they won't fix it. As an example I was an early adopter and was using it with digital television (ATSC DTV). Microsoft only supported analog so I was out in the cold. This is now fixed but their policy was that since they didn't know about DTV when they wrote it then it is fine without it.

The Windows problem is that OS X feels better for most things. If I only used the machine for home theater and did not leverage it for other uses then Windows 7 would be fine.

Every time eyeTV loses its guide data I think about switching. I definitely would stick with the Mac mini platform as it is small and quiet. Every other Wintel box I have found is noisy.

The weird thing now is that Elgato is charging for guide data while Microsoft is still providing it for free with their operating system and WMC is included as well.

Elgato, in their Forum, makes it clear
that TitanTV is shaking THEM down for
their Guide Service. So, instead of Elgato
giving US the option of who's Guide to
use and pay for, Elgato is limiting our
choices. Thats just BAD BUSINESS.

It would make more sense to INCREASE
the choices of their customer base, NOT
limit it. It looks like ELGATO doesn't
care that they are going to lose business
from a customer base that they already
have. That wouldn't be the first time
a business shoots itself in the wallet.

I'm hoping someone finds a Hack
to keep TitanTV active in EyeTV.
I haven't upgraded v3.2.1.

Its now v3.3.3. If I don't upgrade
I wonder if I will still lose TitanTV's
Guide. Only time will tell.
If that doesn't work I'll need a
plan "B" standing by.

ANYONE ELSE HAVE A PLAN "B"?

I agree with Saul, WMC in my experience back in the analog days was phenomenal. WMC just worked, it was beautifully designed and the recordings worked. I changed because digital was becoming the standard and WMC was not being upgraded to reflect the change. I also changed because I got fed up with having to reinstall windows every 4-6 months because something would break.

I don't see elgato losing business at all. In the mac world they have a monopoly. There is no other business that is even close to what elgato has established. Miglia and a number of others are dead. I also don't see elgato being in trouble because of what they are trying to do with the iphone. I know they are going to create something for the ipad and its a simple fact there is a huge demand for that and people will come to elgato for it. I just wished their program developers would focus on eyetv and start from scratch.

I think if you have a copy of the preferences files that had TitanTV as the guide you can still use TitanTV. I have the newest eyeTV software installed and still use TitanTV's guide. The trick is during set up to not select TVGuide and continue without setting up a TV Guide account. When setup is complete you can go into preferences and Titan is available.

I run EyeTV 3.3.3 and still use TitanTV. As ownZero said, it's as simple as ignoring TV Guide in the setup. The way I understood it, the only advantage to TV Guide was the guide was two weeks out instead of just one. Wasn't worth it to me for $20.

I just got the ETV1 after having an old 250 long ago. Just installed, updated and not loaded TV GUide at all.

I used TitanTV back when and liked it.

So I click on the show I want in TTV, download the program.tvpi - but get this -

The channel xxx xis not available

A schedule has been created but will not record
If you are sure you receive xxxx re-select the EPG provider in the Programs window channel list to associate that channel with xxxxx.

Of course I have NONE in the EPG guide and TTV doesn't show up.

How do I map channels without an EPG?
