Apple today updated its signature all-in-one iMac with next generation Intel i5 quad-core processors, new AMD Radeon HD graphics, high-speed Thunderbolt I/O technology and a new FaceTime HD camera. According to the company, the new iMac is up to 70 percent faster and new graphics deliver up to three times the performance of the previous generation. Pricing for the new iMac starts at $1199.
"Our customers love the iMac's aluminum enclosure, gorgeous display and all-in-one design," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "With next generation quad-core processors, powerful new graphics, Thunderbolt technology and a FaceTime HD camera, we've made the world's best desktop even better."
The 21.5-inch iMac is available in two configurations: one with a 2.5 GHz quad-core Intel Core i5, AMD Radeon HD 6750M and 500GB hard drive for a suggested retail price of $1,199; and one with a 2.7 GHz quad-core Intel Core i5, AMD Radeon HD 6770M and 1TB hard drive for a suggested retail price of $1,499 . The new 27-inch iMac is available in two models: one with a 2.7 GHz quad-core Intel Core i5, AMD Radeon HD 6770M and 1TB hard drive for a suggested retail price of $1,699; and one with a 3.1 GHz quad-core Intel Core i5, AMD Radeon HD 6970M and 1TB hard drive for a suggested retail price of $1,999.

A nice update indeed. I certainly can't think of anything lacking. Perhaps the 21" model only having one Thunderbolt port if you want to nitpick. It would also be nice if the entry-level 21" model had the same Radeon HD 6770M graphics, but I guess that gives them some more differentiation between the 21" models.

I used to be in the same matte camp, but I'm sort of changing my mind about the glass now. I think the iPad got me used to the glass and glare. I don't see Apple turning back at this point either. Don't get me wrong though. I'm a proud owner of a matte ACD, but Apple is moving forward and there is no use in fighting the trend anymore. That being said, I would never again buy an all-in-one desktop from Apple. I would much rather have a Mac mini or Mac Pro when it comes to the desktop. That's why I bought a 2010 Mac mini to use with the older ACD. Now, I'm looking to buy a 27" ACD in the near future and pass this one down to my nephew.
Nice update for the iMac though. I just hope TB finds it's way into the next Mac mini as well. I think that would make a lot of people happy. Well, that and a quad-core processor. |

Yeah the glass is nice on my ipad but It seems to hurt my eyes much quicker, but that could be the size or brightness. Don't know. I don't "need" and upgrade yet, but sometimes I think about it. With Lion coming out another alternative would be a mac book pro hooked up to a monitor. I can't wait to see what they do with the mini. Although I prefer the older minis appearance much better. They would have to really upgrade that baby for me to switch I wish they would add another desktop/ "tower" something in between a mini and a pro. I will have to keep dreaming.  |

They are not the very best cards on the market. In fact, they aren't even the desktop version of the 6000 series. I'm not trying to pick a fight, but I would just rather have a true desktop card (not the mobile version) in the iMac pushing these higher resolution screens. The rest of this update was impressive. |

| I wish the 27-inch models didn't start out so high in price. I know they are a decent deal all things considered, but that's just an awful lot of money to fork out these days. I'm just talking about the barriers to entry. |

IPS panels in all the iMacs. This is the case with the previous generation as well. |

Cool, thanks. I don't see anything mentioned about the panels on Apple's website. I sort of remember reading about the older 21" iMacs using a different one than the 24" iMacs. I wasn't sure if that had changed. Is it actually stated on their website? Maybe I'm just missing it. |

In Late 2009 all iMacs had IPS display panels 21.5" and 27" 16:9 ratio. The new models do as well.

Prior to that you had to get the 24" model to get an IPS panel, the 20" models do not have it. These were 16:10 panels.
I'm not sure where it says it on Apple's site on the newest models, but it certainly is the case.
