Hello , so I finally defected from windows pcs and have finally bought the new mac mini . So far I'm very happy although it is taking a bit of getting used to . My friend has also just given me his old 2006 model mini which is running 10.4 on it . I assumed I could use my disks from my new one to upgrade the old one to snow leopard . It doesn't seem to like this ? Do I need to buy another copy of snow leopard ? Many thanks oh and it's nice to be here !

Good move switching to the Mac Very Happy

The disks from the new one will be specific for that model mini, which could be why they aren't working. You can buy a Snow Leopard retail disk fairly cheaply though. It was only something like $25 from Apple.

Before you buy Snow Leopard though I'd check the spec of your older mini. You can do this by clicking on the Apple Icon in the menu bar and selecting About This Mac. A 2006 mini should be an Intel CPU which will be fine, if however it's an older machine with a PPC CPU then Snow Leopard won't install on it.

Thanks for the help , I picked up a retail version of snow leopard today and it installed just fine . Now I just need to work on my shortcut skills and find a apple keyboard with a nun pad and I will be set. I have to admit in loving the mac it's just taking a little getting used to but so far I'm sold .

Its the wired Apple keyboard that has the number pad, the wireless keyboard doesn't.

For keyboard shortcuts check out KeyCue which pops up an overlay showing what shortcuts are available

and DashKards which is similar but using a desktop widget.

These two show you what shortcuts are available, however the one I would say is the first app I install on a new Mac is Launchbar it's improves your keyboard interaction by controlling lots of things on your Mac, you really have to watch a screencast on it to see what it can do, but I can do all sort just with launchbar and never have to let my hand leave the keyboard. Its an application launcher, a search tool, a calculator, a file mover, I can find songs in my itunes library and play them without ever starting iTunes. It really is an amazing app. Its well worth checking out.
