It should be noted that Apple quietly dropped the price of build-to-order memory and hard drive upgrades for the Mac mini this morning while the Apple Store was down for updates. The price of a 500GB hard drive upgrade (sort of easier than upgrading on your own this time around) has dropped from $100 to $50. Memory upgrades in the form of 8GB (2 x 4GB sticks) were dropped from $500 to $300. So, if you are counting, this now puts the sticker price of a maxed out Mac mini with a 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 500GB hard drive and 8GB of RAM at $1199.

I would do the hard drive, but you can still do better with the RAM elsewhere.

I would rather do the upgrade myself & put in a 7200.

they are hoping to dump stock on hand of the 2010 mini. the ram will be 1333 in the next mini.
If I can buy a pair of 4gb rams sticks for under 80 so can apple. I am thinking on a early may 2011 mini.
with the same cpu and same t-bolt options as the 13 inch macbook pro.
in fact compare a 2011 mac book pro base model list is 1199 a maxed 2010 mac mini listed is 1199 what machine would you want? a machine with 5950 geekbench score or a machine with 4100 geekbench score.

They are 5400. That's what I did with a 7200. It was more of a PIA upgrading than the older Mac minis though. It would probably be easier to just let Apple do it for $50 if 5400 is acceptable and you want more capacity. |

I don't think that apple can get it for 80 $, they have it way cheaper 
Actually, as I pass on the MM 2010 I forget, that this time - the first time in a MM, you can change the RAM on your own "legally". So 500$ for a pair of 2x4GB RAM is a big piece of arrogance and 300$ doesn't change anything in my apple book …

I could be wrong, but I don't think Apple said anything about not being able to upgrade the RAM in the older Mac minis. It certainly didn't void your warranty. |

Well, I don't want to flame a discussion about it.
There are tons of articles about it, with the conclusion that you could change it, but there are some users with another experience.
This is probably not an "0 or 1" solution and you might be right, as well as you might be wrong.
For example the service center where I live see it as voiding the guarantee. That's why I wrote that, MM 2011 is in this case completely other, there is no yes or no.

| I thought they saw it as a violation of the warranty if they opened it and found the new RAM, but if you switched it back before going to the store, they'd never know the difference. |

this is why you buy refurbs with 2009 models.
You can just tell the apple store it came with extra ram. this does happen on occasion I have been give 4gb ram instead of 2gb I have been given 8gb instead of 4gb ram. I have been given a scorpio black hdd 500gb instead of a 160gb oem apple/hitachi and once was given an 80gb intel ssd intead of an oem 120gb hdd. This is out of 60 models maybe 5 or 6 free upgrades.
