Plex & EyeTV played smoothly on my mini with my 1080i tv (using switchrx to output 720P). But now that I have upgraded to a 1080P TV, I'm getting dropped frames with most content (HD OTA via EyeTV, 1080P rips via Plex, and HD iTunes rentals. I've gotta think it is the video card struggling with the 1080P output. Sure I could drive the TV with a lower rez signal, but I'd rather have 1080P, mostly for the computer interface.

My mini is a 2,1 1.83 core duo with 2G ram. Is the solution to upgrade to a version 3 mini with the better graphics card?

there might be an issue with framerate, take a look at adjusting on your tv. have you posted or looked through the plex site?

I did some searching there, and the AVS forum. At AVS, they're saying that you need a minimum 2ghz processor with the newer video card to play 1080p. I'm also having a new issue with audio sync.

I'll play around with refresh rate.

A 2009 or 2010 Mac mini will get you there. The GMA 950 just struggles at that level of output. To be honest, it's really about upgrading machines at this point.

I guess it's a good thing the 2007 minis are still fetching $400 used.

Yeah, the market seems pretty strong for older Mac minis. I guess that's to be expected though. Macs always hold their value relatively well. Plus, Apple raised the barriers to entry for the new 2010 Mac mini. I basically sold my 2009 Mac mini because of this factor. Then came away with a new 2010 refurb for like $100 more. I thought that was worth the extra penny for HDMI and the new feature set. I would probably suggest doing the same while the getting is a good. Laughing
