Microsoft today announced the release of a free 30-day trial of Office for Mac 2011. This includes fully functional demos of Word 2011, Excel 2011, PowerPoint 2011, and Outlook 2011, which is only available in the Home and Business edition of Office for Mac 2011.

We're happy to announce we now have a full trial available at www.microsoft.com/mac/trial, free to use for 30-days after download. We know it's important for some of you to be able to test out new features. For those that will be trying the suite for the first time, we hope you enjoy some of the new items – Outlook for Mac, new co-authoring tools, Excel's Sparklines, Dynamic Reorder in Word & PowerPoint, and more.

Pricing for Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 starts at $149.99.

Just an idea, but I think it would be cool for Microsoft to sell Word and Excel individually in the Mac App Store. Like for the same price as Pages and Numbers.

That would be great! I doubt it will happen though.

I'm definitely going to try the trial. Office 2010 was such a let down, so I never got around to upgrading. In fact, I went back to using the old version (Office 2004) under Rosetta in Snow Leopard.

I doubt that Microsoft will be willing to give up 30% of Office revenue to Apple. However, if iWork grabs a significant amount of market share through the Mac App Store, then they may not have a choice. Or perhaps they will provide a more stripped down version for the App Store. So far Microsoft's only comment on the App Store is that they are "evaluating" it.

To each their own, but I would be more inclined to wait for iWork '11 at this point. Which you know will be available through the apps store.

Microsoft says they are looking at the idea though. I mean, as fas as bringing Office applications to the Mac App Store.
